@Chris_arnade We certainly need enforcement of norms and enforcement generally to be a well functioning society. But claiming that enforcement is the primary tool we should be using to respond to these very vulnerable people ignores the overarching structures that led us here

@Chris_arnade And how much permanent housing does NY have available for individuals experiencing homelessness? The vast majority of that funding goes toward emergency shelter for approx. 90,000 homeless individuals

I love the US, and NYC, but coming back from five weeks in Japan/Korea can be so demoralizing. The E train from Jamaica to Port Authority was a mess. Filthy, depressing, and a minefield of possible problems. The car I was in had at least six guys in various states of distress. I sat next to one, a clearly mentally compromised man, muttering to himself, who made it clear he didn't like me being so close, but I bet he wasn't having a bad day. He wasn't because he was drugged into lethargy, but you never really can tell, and you always risk a miscalculation. I'm a pretty large guy and I've spent a lot of time around people like this, so I wasn't worried, but I felt bad for the women on there, some with kids, who have to play a far riskier game when riding the subway. Sure, the odds of something bad happening are small, but they should be zero, and they could be, if we only enforced the rules.

@Chris_arnade There are deep, structural issues feeding these challenges that you’re claiming “norm enforcement” alone will fix. Ignoring that we don’t fund nearly enough housing and services for the poor and vulnerable in this country

@Chris_arnade Chris I respect your work generally, but I work in this space and have first hand experience. Have you worked in any of these fields you claim are so resource rich?

@Chris_arnade Defining our social safety net as “robust” is a massive stretch. Looking at all factors, resource distribution nationally is nowhere near where it needs to be to meet the full need. Claiming enforcement and “forced treatment” alone will solve these issues is not helpful, truly

@AstrosOptimism2 So much melodrama and displays of non-ball knowledge after those first two games! And tbf, any overreactions to this offensive outburst would also be unfounded. But the approaches at the plate already appear to be light years better than last couple years. This year could be fun

I react to what I’m seeing and it’s ever changing. I’m very pleased with this winning streak and I’d like for it to continue tomorrow.

@Chris_arnade Your enforcement and mandated MH treatment plan seems to presuppose that there is enough housing, MH programming, and adequate social safety netting to meet the full need in this country. That is nowhere near the case and we already jail more ppl than any other nation on earth

We don't have public restrooms because they'd be trashed in days. We don't build bus stops because they'd become homeless shelters. We don't have dense walkable cities because nobody wants to be accosted by strangers. This is because we have chosen to accept public disorder, and as the rest of the world shows, it doesn't have to be that way walkingtheworld.substack.com/p/america-and-…

@Chris_arnade Hi Chris - have long been a follower of your work and have an appreciation for what you do. Genuine question - what do you see as the primary factors driving this crisis in urban areas in the US, as you see it, and what do you think the solutions are?

Keep defending this immoral stuff with big academic words, meanwhile mentally incompetent people are being left to die on the streets in the corrupted name of empathy. It is sick

I met John in Phoenix. He had set himself on fire the day before, freebasing a perc 30, and refused to go to the hospital because he didn't want to lose his favorite spot behind the garbage bin, since it was only a block away from dealers, and perfect to piss in. He had a government room he didn't use, because catching on fire (something he did every now and then) set off smoke alarms. He also thought it was cursed and monitored by the same people who had held him captive on an island in the middle of the pacific -- and island he escaped from three months before by swimming the 400 miles. He showed me an arm, covered with burns, that he claimed was where a shark had bit him. John should not be out on the streets setting himself on fire. If you cannot see that, then I can't help you

the “people are homeless because they refuse housing” line is so infuriating bc ut comes from a real place, but what people are actually refusing is parternalistic control. People do want housing, they just don’t want curfews, bureaucratic bullshit, sobriety requirements, etc.

@BenDuBose My bet is on them flipping the switch to close this out. There are too many good ball players on this team that have done it so many times before. Time to prove it again

Anyway, the best framing I can give is this: It’s basically all tied with 10 to go. If they can turn it on when it really matters, analogous to a postseason series, this sample — while small — is still bigger than an LCS or WS! It’s all still out there, including 2 seed and bye

@RooshWilliams Bro this team is absolutely stacked on both sides of the ball for several more years. So many overreactions from Twitter warriors to a small stretch of poor play. We’re all gonna be laughing at this in a few weeks

No matter where the Astros end up this season, I'm at peace with it. All good things come to end, and it's nothing short of a blessing for fans to have watched this team dominate for the better part of a decade. 6+ years and counting. One of the greatest teams I've ever seen.

It’s Thursday which means the Astros are off. With Astros news a bit slow today, drop a comment below and tell me what you think it’s going to take for them to repeat as champs in 2023!

If you’re an #Astros fan, you can’t just support them during all the good wins, you need to support them during the rough times as well, otherwise you’re not a true fan. If there’s 1 thing that we know about this team during the golden era, it’s that they get it done when it matters most. No reason to think otherwise this year. Have belief. Houston is only 1 game back with roughly 30 to go. They would still be in the playoffs right now. As long as they are in the playoffs, the Astros will make noise. #Ready2Reign

@BenDuBose Aren’t they graduating him up to playing back to back SL games to see how he responds physically? If he responds well, I suspect we see him very soon

First off, that quote is bullshit. If he's not physically healthy, he shouldn't play in Sugar Land, either. Baseball is baseball. If it's about timing, there's a reason you have coaches and executives. Maybe he doesn't think he's in peak form, yet. It's still better than Julks.

@janpressly1 This is a team of legends. We’ve been beyond blessed to enjoy this run alongside them. And the run is not over! One heartbreaking loss in August doesn’t suddenly un-do the championship DNA of this team. The best is yet to come. And the struggle now will make it all the more sweet

@AstrosOptimism2 Astros Twitter this year has been comically dramatic and over-reactionary with literally every decision and loss. Brantley is coming back. Framber is inducing ground balls again. Tuck gonna Tuck. Yordan will rediscover his power stroke. I truly believe the best days are ahead
