The display explores the impacts of conflict and the importance of community in times of crisis. It was developed with members of Sudanese and South Sudanese communities in London during the British Museum’s partnership with ‘Safeguarding Sudan’s Living Heritage’. The display also features an artwork by Azza Gasim about the continuance of tradition and a photograph by Monti al-Saddig Mohammed. It can be seen as part of the free, permanent display at the Museum. In his welcoming speech, the Director Nick Cullinan described the display as signalling the future of work at the museum – centring human stories and collaborative working. The opening was a moment of joy and togetherness. In a reading, the writer Dinan al-Asad reflected on how the objects on display bought back childhood memories of Khartoum, and spoke to the enduring importance of generosity, community and connection. She reminded us of the proverb: لو النفوس إتطايبت، العنقريب بيشيل مية, As long as souls are aligned on kindness, one bed can carry a hundred people. English version below📷 في يوليو الماضي، نظم مشروع "صون التراث الحي في السودان من النزاعات وتغير المناخ" بالتعاون مع مركز الموسيقى السودانية التقليدية ورشةً متخصصة في نقل حرفة صناعة الآلات الموسيقية التقليدية. شارك في الورشة خمسة مدربين وعشرة متدربين من أصحاب المصلحة والراغبين في تعلم هذه الحرفة من المجتمع المحلي بكسلا. استهدفت الورشة إتقان صناعة عدد من الآلات التقليدية التي تمثل تنوع المجموعات الثقافية السودانية. شاهدوا في هذا الفيديو ردود فعل الميسّرين والمتدربين حول تجربة الورشة ومخرجاته. Last July, the “Safeguarding Sudan’s Living Heritage from Conflict and Climate Change” project, in collaboration with the Sudanese Traditional Music Center, organized a specialized workshop on transmitting the craft of traditional musical instrument making. The workshop brought together five trainers and ten trainees from local stakeholders and community members in Kassala who are eager to learn and practice this traditional craft. It focused on mastering the making of several traditional instruments representing the diversity of Sudan’s cultural groups. English version below⬇️ في الماضي كانت العروس ترتدي ثوباً أبيض ووجهها مغطى بقماش حرير يُسمَّى القرمصيص، ليكشف العريس عنه ويراه وأهله ربما لأول مرة. بعد كشف وجهها يتم قطع الرحط من حول خصر العروس، ويكون بداخله بعض الحلوى يتم تفريقها على الفتيات كفئل خير لهنّ باقتراب دورهن للزواج، ويُخرِج بعده العريس مبلغاً ماليّاً يعطيه للسيدة التي تستلم الرحط وتعطيه لأم العروس. يلي ذلك "رقيص العروس"، وقد كان من أهم الطقوس في الزواج السوداني، حيث ترقص العروس أمام العريس ويلعبان لعبة، حيث يجب ألا يتركها تسقط لتسجّل عليه نقطة في كلّ رقصة. اقرأ المقال كاملاً من هنا: sslh.info/ar/posts/weddi… ‍ In the past the bride wore a white tob with her face was covered in the distinctive silk garmasis fabric which the groom would remove so he and his family could see her face, possibly for the first time. Then the ritual of gat’ al-rahat was performed in which the thick thread tied around the bride’s waist at her engagement was cut by the groom. Sweets were tied to it so it was tossed to the young ladies as a good omen for the non-married, and afterwards the groom paid a sum of money to the lady who gave him the rahat to pass on to the bride’s mother for the last of the rituals, the bridal dance. The dance was the most anticipated event. In February of this year, Kassala shone with a new face at the soft opening of the Peace Garden, as its essential features began to take shape. There, creative hands and hopeful spirits gathered from across Eastern Sudan, where rich diversity and many faces together forge the alloy of one nation. From its very first moment, the garden became a stage for hope, a beacon of encounter, and a symbol embracing heritage and creativity in the lap of nature. Celebrating World Tourism Day at the Kassala Peace Park. This was the first edition of the event organized and supervised by the Directorate General of Tourism and Antiquities, and was managed and supervised by a select group of government employees and volunteers who received training in organizing and managing events and festivals through the Safeguarding Sudan’s Living Heritage project . We are on the right track to developing a management plan to support and enhance the park's role in showcasing and promoting living cultural heritage. With this, we have trained them on: "How to Catch Fish." English version below⬇️ عندما يتم تحديد موعد الزواج يُقدِّم العريس ما يسمى بـ"الشيلة"،وهي عبارة عن مستلزمات العروس من لبس وعطور ومجوهرات وغيره من احتياجات العروس. ومن ثم تبتدئ تجهيزات الزفاف والعرس وتدخل العروس في "الحَبْسَة"، وهو نوع من العزل لتتفرغ للاستعداد ليوم الزفاف. ‍ في الماضي كانت العروس أثناء الحبسة تقوم بتجهيز احتياجاتها للبيت الجديد، من تطريز وحياكة وتجهيز الشراشف وكذلك بعض احتياجات الخطيب من ملابس. تحضير وتجهيز المنزل الجديد بالفَرْش والأثاث كانت من ضمن مسؤوليات والد العروس للدلالة على مكانتها، كما كانت تقوم أم العروس بتجهيز أواني المطبخ والأطباق والبهارات وما يُسمَّى بالشرموط، وهو لحم مُجَفَّف ومحفوظ،وكذلك البصل والويكا (بامية مجفَّفَة ومطحونة). أثناء فترة الحبسة تجلس العروس يوميّاً للدخان، وهي جلسة بُخار تتم بخشب عطري يُسمَّى الطلح أو الشاف، ويكون هذا تحت إشراف إحدى القريبات، ويُشترط أن تكون سعيدة في حياتها لتكون فأل خير لحياة العروس المقبلة. اقرأ المقال كاملاً من هنا: sslh.info/ar/posts/weddi… ‍ Once a date is set for the wedding, the groom presents the bride with her shela or dowry which consists of clothes, perfumes and jewellery. Next begins the lengthy wedding preparations and the bride succumbs to being confined at home or al-habsa. In the past, this time of isolation was used by the bride to sew and embroider furnishings for her future home; bed sheets, and handmade items of clothing for her fiancé. Preparing and furnishing the newlywed’s house was the task of the bride’s father, to signify the status of his daughter. The bride's mother prepared the various covers and kitchen staples, from cooking utensils to traditional ingredients like dried meat sharmut, onions and weka, dried okra powder. The bride would be plumped up and beautified for her wedding. Dukkhan the perfumed smoke bath the bride sits on regularly before the wedding was supervised by a woman who met certain criteria; she had to be a close relative and happy in her life and thus a good omen for the bride, protecting her against marital problems or divorce. Today we have chosen to tell the zir’s story because it is connected to both the present and to the past and because it is used for watering by travellers and settlers alike. In the past, every train carriage had a mazyarah holding a zir, and many composers were inspired to create their melodies after hearing the shaking sound of the zir on the train. As we travelled around the different regions of Sudan to document the country’s culture and civilisation, we found that the zir was the soul of the place; it was present in most homes and places in different shapes and forms. Every state in Sudan had a zir that differed from those in other states depending on the type of clay used to make it and the natural environment of the place. Gen. (Rtd) Al-Sadiq Mohamed Al-Azraq, the Peace Heritage Garden was inaugurated in Kassala alongside the Autumn Flower Exhibition. The garden, a key outcome of the Safeguarding Sudan’s Living Heritage Project, showcases diverse architectural styles reflecting Sudan’s rich legacy. The opening featured artisans’ displays — palm weaving, perfumes, blacksmithing, and oil pressing — plus a scene of Quran school students gathered around the “Tegaba” fire. Limestone is one of them. It is easily recognised in the form of stone blocks. Just think of ancient stone temples, columns or statues, or facing stones on more modern buildings. It is less recognizable when crushed or powdered and mixed with other materials like mud or sand. It is easily confused with cement because it looks almost the same – unsurprisingly as cement is made from crushed limestone – but it behaves very differently. It is important to know what these differences are when restoring traditional buildings like the Khalifa House in Omdurman if you want to avoid further damage. In Sudan, restoration techniques can lead to a wider appreciation of local resources and traditional building methods, and ways of using them for today’s climate that don’t cost the earth. The culture surrounding food consumption and what is on offer in the market affects what we eat shows how they influence each other. The eating habits of a community can be gleaned by visiting their markets and markets themselves also play a significant role in shaping and influencing eating habits. ‍ The availability and accessibility of variety food provide access to a wide range of food products, including fresh produce, processed foods, and international cuisines. This variety allows consumers to explore different eating styles, but only appears when the economical and cultural dynamics of an area change, commonly apparent with increase of city size or increase of foreigners in an area. The change of lifestyle sometimes requires convenience which would then be reflected in the markets and types of processed food available. The change of lifestyle does not eradicate the cultural and social influences. English version below⬇️ الجبراكة -وجمعها جباريك- هو مصطلح من غرب السودان، ويُعدّ من المُمَارسات الزراعية التقليدية التي تُشَكِّل جزءاً أساسياً من حياة المجتمعات الريفية في مناطق غرب السودان. إنها نموذج للزراعة المنزلية أو الزراعة على نطاق صغير، تعتمد على قطع أراضٍ صغيرة تُحيط بالمنازل أو داخل القرى، حيث تَزرع العائلات مجموعة متنوعة من المحاصيل لتلبية احتياجاتها الغذائية ودعم الاقتصاد المحلي. تُشير كلمة جبراكة إلى قطع الأراضي الزراعية الصغيرة، حيث تُزرع محاصيل متنوّعة مثل الدخن، والذرة، والسمسم، والفول السوداني، إلى جانب مجموعة متنوعة من الخضروات. يعتمد سكان غرب السودان، خاصة في مناطق مثل دارفور وكردفان، على الجبراكة كمصدر أساسي للغذاء. اقرأ المقال كاملاً من خلال الرابط sslh.online/ar/posts/the-j… الصورة:زراعة الفول السوداني – بداية موسم الخريف واستعداد المزارعين له، قرية النزل، ولاية النيل الأبيض © الفاضل حامد The Jubraka (plural Jabarik) in western Sudan is one of the traditional agricultural practices that form an essential part of the lives of many rural communities in the region. It is a model of household, or small-scale farming, that relies on small plots of land surrounding homes or within villages, where families grow a variety of crops to meet their food needs and support the local economy. The word Jubraka refers to small agricultural plots, where various crops such as sorghum, millet, sesame, and peanuts are cultivated, along with a variety of vegetables. The people of western Sudan, especially in regions like Darfur and Kordofan, depend on the Jubraka as one of the primary sources of food. English version below⬇️ كنتُ كلّما تأتي الإجازة وأذهب إلى بيت حبوبتي "جدتي" عشة، لا يستهويني اللعب مع الأطفال كعادة بنات سني، فقد كنت أحب أن أتابعها وهي تنسج السعف. أوراق النخيل أو جريد شجرة الدوم هو مصدر السعف الذي نستخدمه في منطقتنا، فقد اشتَهرت نساء ولاية نهر النيل بصناعة العديد من منتجات السعف؛ كالطبق، والبرش، والقفاف. ‍ كنت أُتابع جدتي بشغف شديد من بداية جلبها له من السوق كمادة خام حتى ترجعه للسوق كمنتج مُكتمل. كنت أصحو مبكراً جداً قبل أن تنتبه أمي أو أهل البيت، فإن تمَّ القبض عليَّ يتم منعي من الذهاب معها إلى السوق. أتحرّك بهدوء، أرتدي أقرب شيء تقع عليه عيني بأقصى سرعة وأنتظرها عند الباب. أذكر ابتسامتها التي لا تخلو من سخريتها المعهودة، تمسك يدي بإحدى يديها وبالأخرى تحمل سلتها التي صنعتها بنفسها من السعف وتُسمَّى عندنا (القفة). كانت حبوبتي عشّة مشهورة بعمل البروش وسجادة الصلاة والقفاف. تبدأ مراحل تجهيز السعف بكسر إحدى جوانبه التي تكون حادة جداً كي تستخدمه كإبرة للخياطة، وبعد ذلك يوضع السعف في الماء كي يبتل، ويساعد ذلك في عملية النَسْج حتى لا يتكسَّر عند صناعة أي مُنتج، أما المكان فقد كانت هناك غرفة في ركن بيت جدي مُخَصَّصة لأعمال السعف، عندما يبدأ العمل يتم إخلاء أثاث الغرفة بالكامل وتُغرس فيها أربعة أوتاد في أركان الغرفة الأربعة، بعد ذلك يُربط طرف السعف في إحدى الأوتاد وتبدأ في نسجه. اقرأ المقال كاملاً من خلال الرابط sslh.online/ar/posts/the-p… المؤلف: فاطمة عثمان محمد مصطفى الصورة © شركة مالينسون للهندسة المعمارية، متحف نورة، نيالا، دارفور "Whenever the holidays came, and I visited my grandmother, ‘Haboba’ Asha, I wasn’t interested in playing with other children, as girls my age usually did. Instead I loved watching her weave palm fronds. In our region, we used palm leaves or the fronds of the doum tree for weaving. Women from the River Nile State were famous for crafting various palm products, such as mats, trays, and baskets. I observed my grandmother with great enthusiasm—from the moment she brought the raw materials from the market to the time she returned them for sale as finished products. I would wake up very early, before my mother or anyone else in the house noticed. If I was caught, I would be forbidden from going to the market with her. I moved quietly, put on the first thing I could find as quickly as possible, and waited for her at the door. I still remember her familiar, teasing smile as she held my hand in one of hers and carried the woven basket—called ‘guffa’ in our dialect—with the other. Haboba Asha was famous for making prayer mats, traditional woven mats, and baskets. The process began by breaking off one sharp point of the frond to use as a sewing needle. The fronds were then soaked in water to make them pliable, preventing them from breaking during weaving. There was a dedicated room in my grandfather’s house for palm weaving. Before starting work, all the furniture was removed, and four wooden stakes were planted in the corners of the room. One end of the frond was tied to a stake, and she began weaving.
