Originally called Decoration Day, Black Americans interred the bodies of fallen Union soldiers to honor their sacrifice — now known as Memorial Day. Decades later, my great-grandfather served our nation in WWI. Then my grandfather took post in WWII and the Korean War. Today and every day, I honor their sacrifice by fighting for rights they were denied in a country they loved, knowing freedom will prevail if we refuse to give up the battle.

Former Georgia House Minority Leader @staceyabrams testifies against Tennessee's new Congressional map, which would eliminate the only Democrat-held seat in the state. "It is a deeply disturbing truth that Memphis, the place where Dr. King gave his life, is being told that your voices are so irrelevant that we will deny you even one voice in Congress, that one voice out of nine is too much for you. That is a very clear signal and it is, I believe, an act of cowardice to deny them that voice."

Through intentional decisions that have chipped away at democracy’s guardrails, we are returning to the before-times when voters of color were silenced before a single vote was cast.

Today’s cruel ruling on Louisiana v. Callais guts what was left of the Voting Rights Act and sets us farther on the path to authoritarianism — aided and abetted by the Supreme Court.

The Voting Rights Act ended 150 years of Jim Crow and finally gave truth to the 15th Amendment. In a democracy, the faith of the people is born of a belief that they can participate in its processes and benefit from its success.
