Mark Carney says Canada may need to limit free speech to tackle racism and Islamophobia. That’s a big step. Hate is real, and it can be ugly. But once minority governments start deciding what we can and can’t say, that line keeps moving. This is not Democracy, this is scary.

Who is this Ninja? If you guessed anyone other than Carney's latest patronage pick you're wrong. Janice Charette is now Canada's chief trade negotiator for the high-stakes CUSMA review. She has zero experience in actual trade deals, tariffs, supply management battles, or staring down U.S. negotiators. She's a career bureaucrat. Twice Clerk of the Privy Council, High Commissioner to the UK, lots of deputy minister gigs in health, immigration, and HR. In other words, a pure "Ottawa insider" resume, but not one day negotiating trade with Trump 2.0, Mexico, or anyone else. This is just another loyalty reward from Carney. She served under Trudeau, helped usher him in, and advised on his transition team. Now she gets the plum job steering Canada's biggest economic relationship during a tense review. Because nothing says "advance Canadian interests" like putting a lifelong leech with no trade experience in the driver's seat. Classic Ottawa, where competence is optional, but connections are mandatory.

A great example of what this law encourages - appearance-based denigration of women. And it’s happening in several sports that I am aware of.

Skate Canada has barred Alberta from hosting future skating events because our province chose to protect women’s and girls’ sports. Skate Canada receives over $2 million in federal taxpayer funding—including from Albertans. Using public money to punish one province over a political disagreement is unfair and wrong.

@irbrodie Thank you @irbrodie for speaking up. We need to nip this in the bud before it’s too late. This law is bringing out the worst in this discussion, and many nuances are lost as to the impact this is having, if I may say so as a current sport administrator.

With respect, I disagree. Skate Canada should make whatever decision it thinks is best for its sport. And its members will sort out whether that’s right as they reflect over time. It’s a free country and they can exercise their corporate freedom as they wish. I look forward to Volleyball Canada national youth tournament in YYC in May.

Skate Canada is a federally funded non-profit Skate Canada says that it will no longer be hosting certain events in Alberta over its transgender law "...they say that they reviewed Alberta's Fairness and Safety in Sport act with the organization now saying that it's unable to host events in this province while maintaining its national standards for safe and inclusive sport." The notwithstanding clause is a part of the Charter and its use while controversial is lawful Skate Canada is making a clearly political decision with Canadian taxpayer dollars and at the CRA website "A registered charity CANNOT be involved in PARTISAN political activities." @SkateCanada @ABDanielleSmith
