As someone who exclusively works teaching reading to students at the Tier 3 level, I have found that more often than not it is not that some kids can't learn to read, but rather that many kids are often not taught the way they need(structure/explicit instruction) and/or provided instruction at the intensity they need with the amount of practice they require. For many, it is easier to think that it is the kids and the family's fault for the struggle that so many kids experience. The truth is different. The more a child deviates from being able to learn "the way school districts teach reading" the less successful they are likely to be. Why? Because the system is rigid and is not designed to be self-accountable and to revise itself in real time.

@growinglearners I saw this and am intrigued too! The quality of rigor, relevance and accountability of what students are doing while not at the small group table has been an instructional focus for us this year.

Interesting read by @ReadingShanahan on the research-based effectiveness of small group instruction. Let’s rethink small group instruction & its non-intended consequences…especially in the younger grades when Ss are “working” independently for so long.
