We are the only country in the world that pays off the medical bills of people who do not even belong here, but we expect our own citizens to pay not only their own bills but also the illegal bills. Then they expect us to accept it and shut up.

One Unbelievable Day. by Michael Whelan There are moments in life that feel borrowed from a dream too surreal, too sacred, too stitched with grace to belong to someone like me. But they do. They did. With everything that’s happened my battles with cancer, three rounds in the ring with death, the endless nights of caregiving, the slow heartbreak of watching the love of my life slip in and out of time I should’ve given up. Hell, there were days I did. I’ve crawled through fire that never cooled, been betrayed by people I once would’ve taken a bullet for, and stood at the crossroads of madness and survival more times than I can count. Yet somehow, I never stopped trudging forward. I didn't sprint. I didn't soar. I trudged like an old soldier with nothing left but memory, heart, and sheer stubbornness. Then came a day. A single, unbelievable day where I looked at my screen and saw my name—my name on the Amazon Book Charts. Not just once. But twice. Number ONE. In two categories. A book I wrote with trembling fingers, during the quietest hours when sorrow sat on my chest and the only thing louder than my self-doubt was the sound of Bella’s breathing at my feet. I wrote through pain. Through fear. Through the fog of financial despair and medical fatigue. And still I wrote. And you my beautiful, wild, wonderful tribe of misfits and magic—you believed. You cheered for the eccentric man with scars on his soul and stories that needed telling. You didn’t run from my darkness. You lit a candle in it. I don’t have the words to thank you properly. But know this: You gave me a day I will never forget. You made a broken man feel whole again. You turned the volume up on a life that had been muted by grief. And to the doubters, the ghosts, the ones who left when I needed them most—look at me now. I am still here. Still weird. Still writing. And for one shimmering moment, the world saw me. I may never be on top again. That’s okay. Because I touched the sky and I didn’t do it alone. Love you all. You know who you are. —Michael And a lick from Bella 🐾.

CANCER UPDATE By purchasing Bella, you’re not just supporting a first-time author who has survived three cancers and now cares full-time for his wife with Parkinson’s. You’re joining a movement of empathy, resilience, and the belief that even in the hardest moments, love still finds a way to speak. This book will make you laugh, cry, and hug your own dog and kitty a little tighter. Bella is not just a story. It’s a love letter to everyone who’s ever needed saving—and found their savior in fur and four paws.

GO FUND ME WORLDWIDE 😥 From the U.S. to the U.K., Canada to Australia—Financial Toxicity Is Spreading I just received a call from Washington that my testimony before Congress was cancelled once again and that they'll get back to me "down the road." I once thought we were all safe. I was wrong! Let’s fight this together. I work endlessly as an advocate for Financial Toxicity—a silent epidemic destroying lives, families, and futures. It doesn’t discriminate. It hits patients with life-threatening illnesses hard—and their caregivers just as much. People often ask: What are the consequences of financial toxicity? It’s not just about money. It’s about choosing between rent or chemo. It’s about skipping medication because groceries come first. It’s about debt, bankruptcy, emotional trauma, and for far too many, dying simply because care is unaffordable. My wife Rebecca and I have lived it. We were saved by the kindness of others through a GoFundMe campaign last year. Without it, we would not have made it. Probably homeless or dead; just like millions of others. Now we’re back in that same place. I’ve resigned from my job to be Rebecca’s full-time caregiver as she fights Parkinson’s and I battle my own health issues. Our story isn’t rare anymore—and that should terrify everyone. Here’s what’s even more alarming: For years, people outside the U.S. pointed fingers at our broken healthcare and insurance system, confident it could never happen to them. 82% of all United States bankruptcies are medical related-- now, across the globe—in countries with universal healthcare systems—families are shocked and devastated to find they are not immune. The safety nets are failing. Social programs are stretched. People are falling through the cracks. Imagine, just for one moment, if you didn’t have national healthcare. Now imagine that even with it, you still couldn’t afford the care you need. That’s the new reality. We are all in this together now—this is not just a U.S. crisis anymore. It's a global catastrophe, and it's only getting worse. I was scheduled to testify before Congress in February to raise awareness and demand action. That chance was stripped away by the current administration. But I won’t stop. I can’t. Because millions are still suffering, and too many voices are going unheard. Our personal request: $12,000 in the next 6 months. It will help us survive, do my caregiving responsibilities, and keep fighting. If you can help, we are endlessly grateful. And if you can’t, that’s okay too. You are loved. Just help spread the word—because we must stand together. Let’s stop financial toxicity. Let’s fight for each other. Let’s be the change. I keep my GFM pinned to my bio page. I will address Congress and I will get our world wide politicians to get off of their butts and help those with medical illnesses survive with dignity. 💙

March 2nd is a tough for me. It was March 2nd where my husband stopped his car on the middle of the Burlington Skyway bridge and jumped off. It’s not how his story was supposed to end. My heart is still broken and there isn’t a day I don’t think of him.
