@altairdub which makes it suck when people just do the same shit uninterestingly over and over! but it's like, basic stuff in other things. you have genre conventions, obviously, but there are also archetypes that are not by necessity *bad* but can be with rote repititon

@altairdub yea i think thats kind of it, there are these cliche sounds, but it's all about the execution. with a voice of your own or extra influence any style can be revitalized

what are all the years-overdone trends in complextro? supersaws, offbeat square woops, virtual riot/kshmr drum fills, etc. like what drums are ppl spamming (like the island kick and sexy lady snare in brostep revival stuff), overused packs, bass sounds, all that shit

omg how could i forget about those 2 string fall sounds. the oliver cmin one and that vengeance one

@altairdub honestly it's so much of a banger i didnt even notice that, it doesnt really *feel* stereotypical to me so it doesnt register unlike all those 2014 Virtual Riot Monstercat Epic tunes

to my ableton mutuals: what are your sidechain methods.... i've been using shaperbox but the latency is really kicking me right now

@ogmooselv @atrak this is part of why i really like having these huge playlists on soundcloud for different genres, it's like a form of curation for sounds i love + it's an opportunity to share songs and artists to people who may otherwise not know them

@atrak i think my gen is mostly nostalgic about getting home from school & scrolling the blogs for new music. we had go-to curators we trusted for good taste. now, other than those playlists controlled by the majors, those indie curators dont really exist anymore

We romanticize the blog era (and curation!) a lot, but one thing I think is worth saying: some ppl were/are good at finding niche, interesting, overlooked music (bless them!) while having zero perspective on music at large. And that’s fine 😂

genuine question what made "hypertrance" different from just trance ? was it just the y2k visuals or was there actually a change in the sound

@eupheewtf i always thought it was a faster blend of uplifting trance w/ other sounds (breakbeat, acid, hardcore, etc.) w/ cleaner production, shorter tracks, and a focus on y2k-inspired aesthetics like virtual self. generally vocals are secondary to big synths

@TowerInfero eccentric really is so good, without a doubt one of the standouts of both this new era of disciple and later pre-renovation disciple with that EP

a lot of talk about disciple being back for them to just be pumping out ripoffs of virtual riot (in a style i already found boring from him) and lacking any visualizers while having cmg funds. or even good cover art outside of eccentric

i dislike a lot of the performances in kh1 but "you're stupid!" is genuinely great. it feels wholly sincere like he really is telling his friend that he's being a total asshole and a moron. i don't think kh2 sora ever reaches quite that level of pure frustration
