INDEPENDENCE DAY: SANWO-OLU URGES NIGERIANS TO STAY CONFIDENT AMIDST CHALLENGES
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has urged Nigerians to be confident that the challenges faced in the country now will pave the way for a brighter future for Nigeria.
Sanwo-Olu gave the admonishment today at the Jumat Service commemorating the 65th National Independence Day Celebration held at the Lagos State Secretariat Community Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja.
Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Governor, said that Nigeria presently faces its share of challenges, ranging from Economic pressure, security issues, and the need for inclusive growth, which continue to test the country’s resolve.
According to him, “So humanity has not found out how to solve a lot of problems without pain. As humans, we work on principles, especially in economics, and we must operate within those principles. When making tough decisions, you must look at what is beneficial to make sure that you do things that will ultimately be of advantage to the future of the country.”
He added that with patience, steadfastness, and trust in Allah, citizens should be confident that these challenges will pave the way for a brighter future for Nigeria, owing to the various major economic and political reforms and initiatives being undertaken by the present administration.
Speaking further, Sanwo-Olu appealed to Nigerians to tone down negativity about Nigeria, stressing that while constructive criticism is necessary, it should be accompanied by solutions and positive contributions.
In his words, “For example, criticisms, such as concerns about the standard of education, should go hand in hand with practical suggestions that can help move the nation forward.
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. As we gather in prayer today, let us pledge to be catalysts for positive change, advocating for justice, fostering peace, and striving for the advancement of our State and our nation.
“We must get better, because the way we teach our children must change. It is important for us to train our children and educate ourselves, especially with AI, because the world is changing, and we cannot be esoteric again; we must teach them the way of Allah as it relates to families,” he added.
Speaking on the 65th Independence Anniversary, Sanwo-Olu noted that the occasion serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the founding fathers and the countless citizens who have tirelessly worked and prayed for a united and thriving country, emphasising that their sacrifices and commitment to harmony continue to drive peace and progress in the country.
In his words of admonition, Imam Shakiru Ayinde Gafar stated that leaders should always be accountable and lead the right way to drive prosperity and progress, reminding that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) remains the best example of leadership.
He averred that the Prophet’s simplicity, fairness, and just treatment of both Muslims and non-Muslims made him a universally accepted leader, setting a standard for leaders at all levels today to be fair and just to their followers.
“I urged leaders and citizens alike to examine their actions daily, uphold justice, and emulate the Prophet’s principles in governance and relationships. I also want us to always have self-reflection, responsibility, and a commitment to righteous living as the true path to earning Allah’s mercy and eternal reward,” Imam Gafar stated.
In his goodwill message, Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Engr. AbdulHafiz Toriola urged Nigerians to believe in the country and remain confident that all will be well.
