𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 Ginger farming has, for many years, been a regularized form of agriculture in some African countries due to its economic rewards, export potential, and various other benefits. Quick things to know about ginger: 1. Ginger is planted using rhizomes (it doesn't produce true seeds for planting). 2. It thrives in well-drained, fertile loam soil. 3. Water availability is essential. 4. You need 1,500 kg of ginger seed rhizomes to plant one hectare, and the potential yield is 18 to 40 tonnes per hectare. 5. Ginger takes 8–9 months to mature, so patient farmers are more likely to achieve good results. 6. You can grow ginger organically using compost manure (no fertilizer). 7. Ginger has a ready market because it’s widely used as a spice, a herbal remedy, and in products like drinks, smoothies, and ginger tea, etc. 8. Ginger is easy to grow and manage and performs well in several parts of Africa. 9. The profit margin is high because you can produce a lot of tonnes per hectare compared to other crops. For example, the farm gate price ranges from $1 to $4 per kg. So one hectare producing 18,000 kg = $18,000 minimum. But more on that in the next lesson. 10. Irrigation is necessary—while you can grow it under rain-fed conditions, a backup irrigation system is essential once the rains stop. Remember, ginger takes 9 months!
