Jamaica's cost of living is only about 47 percent lower than the US, but wages here are a fraction of theirs. The median Jamaican earns about 500 US dollars a month, and half the working population earns less than that. Yet we walk into supermarkets with prices set at near American and European levels. Almost first world prices, firmly third world pay.
Look at where we actually sit. Nominal GDP per capita is about 8,350 US dollars against roughly 85,000 in the US, so per person their economy is around 10 times richer. Fine. But our groceries and utilities are priced close to American levels, our internet costs more than most of Europe, and rent in New Kingston rivals cities in far wealthier countries. A full time minimum wage worker takes home around 400 US dollars a month and faces those same imported prices.
That's the trap of being where we are. A small, import dependent island earns local wages but pays global prices, because almost everything on the shelf crossed a border and picked up shipping, duty and GCT on the way. So "name a place that isn't expensive" isn't the flex people think. Plenty of countries are expensive. The difference is their pay matches their prices. We earn like an 8,000 dollar country and pay like a 40,000 dollar one.
Being expensive on a third world salary is a different kind of expensive, and pretending otherwise is how we keep normalising it.

Call a spade a spade. Jamaica is expensive.

@undamipengting I think you read it wrong. They’re simply saying racists will sometimes shield their hate once they find out you’re from a country they vacation to. Not that it *always* happens
English

Jamaicans thinking that their accent will somehow shield them from racism is so insane to me. You know Jamaicans have been killed by racists overseas? You know the amount of racism the UK diaspora has faced? They literally lived through segregation!
from one goodaz to another...🇵🇸@gillie_cee
Brand Jamaica protects Jamaicans in ways you'll never know or understand until you move to a predominantly white region. Even if you're darkskinned, they won't really consider you "black" once they discover you're Jamaican. The difference in treatment is staggering.
