@William91728460 I think we may be coming at a similar opinion from very different angles, since my objection is pretty much entirely about journalists/broadcasters/analysts legitimizing a nuclear deterrence strategy (which I'm sure coaches do consider) instead of demanding the NHL do better.

@statswithkate Assuming you don’t want to see the nhl’s star players regularly targeted, this IS the best way to avoid it. It sucks that this is how the league has been constructed, but it’s true nevertheless.

@William91728460 (It's obviously a different conversation if we were supposed to assume Josi or Duchene to be the one carrying out the "attack", but I don't think either of them has enough of a rep for dangerous plays (as distinct from penalties in general) that we should be assuming that.)

@William91728460 But even if one is talking about the game as it currently is, there's a huge difference between "if John Doe hurts MacKinnon someone should hurt him" and "if John Doe hurts MacKinnon someone should hurt a completely unrelated player".

@William91728460 I can both think that /and/ think that we shouldn't talk about targeting star players as a legitimate strategy, especially giving the example of a player who's arguably risking not just his career but his long-term quality of life every shift.

@William91728460 I think the NHL ought to ban head contact and actually enforce that ban—they're able to suspend as severely as they do for PED use because it's so much easier to prove intent, but something like that might be what it takes.

In nuclear deterrence theory, counter-force means retaliating by nuking the enemy's military. Counter-value means nuking the enemy's cities.
COL needs to make it very clear, very early that any attacks on MacKinnon/Makar will result in immediate consequences for Duchene/Josi.
