New chapter ahead! Joining @GlobalDevInst @UoM as Lecturer (Assistant Professor) of Development Economics. Deeply grateful for an amazing 3.5 years at @IFPRI - bittersweet goodbye, exciting times ahead.

I’ve reported 18 wars over 35 years. I’ve been shot at, kidnapped, threatened, nearly raped. I’ve lost friends from Sarajevo to Syria. I thought I’d seen the worst of humanity. I was wrong. Nothing compares to Gaza — or the complicity letting it happen. #GazaGenocide #WarCrimes

We wanted to verify the evidence behind >$1 billion in grants we've made to our top charities — so we asked @I4Replication to see if they could get the data to replicate the underlying RCTs. It didn't go great... 🧵

Economics research notoriously takes years to finish. I’m working on an RCT that I started in 2012! Peer review rounds take years. I’m on year 6 for my 2012 RCT. During this I learned a new lesson on the cost of long term projects… Standards for publication keep rising.

Might not feel this way on twitter - but back here on earth, DOGE did not have a great day yesterday on the @USAID front. Elon's attempt to speedrun the destruction of USAID is starting to hit real legal and political bumps. The pushback is starting - and must be sustained. 🧵

2️⃣ Depth of poverty affects happiness more than poverty incidence (except for indigenous men). 3️⃣ Relative income matters more for general population: poorer people are unhappy if peers earn more, but richer people gain no extra happiness. (2/3)

🚨 New book chapter! 🚨 exploring the differing factors that shape subjective wellbeing (happiness) among indigenous and general populations in Bangladesh. Key findings are: 1️⃣ Income boosts happiness, but less so for indigenous vs. general populations. (1/3)

Our forthcoming paper in AEJ:Applied. We find combining cash + complementary programming (nutrition BCC) lead to sustainable poverty reduction four years post-program in rural Bangladesh. However, modality and context matters for sustained impacts.
