You might also be stuck with vendor lock-in from the past. But at least don't lock yourself to a vendor for the next system you build.

Then up your target to one sentence, then one paragraph. Maybe eventually even one page. As long as you have a daily target, you can keep moving yourself towards your goal. What are your goals? How can you set a measure and a daily target that helps you move forward?

I have friends who religiously close the circles on their Apple watches every day. Same thing. It works for large goals as well. Want to write a book? Measure how many words you write each day. Start out with a daily target of one. You can do that.

To change your life, choose a measure and set a daily target. The mere existence of a measure and a target affects behavior. One of the things I track is daily steps. My target is obvious from the graph.

Can your solution run on an open-source/open-weight AI engine, or does it only work on a cutting edge commercial model? The risk is real.

Have you addressed the risk of your AI pricing increasing by 2x, 4x or 10x? Will you still have a business case?

Will investors keep funding your AI? If you are building systems based on OpenAI or Anthropic, you are receiving a massive subsidy from their investors.

But now, the ground is shifting under our feet. Our deterministic programs are under threat by probabilistic AI that provides answers that are sorta right. If you are still thinking only in 0 and 1, you have a tough road ahead.

That is one of the few places where you can win an argument simply by being right. Does it pass the test or doesn’t it? Does it respond in less than 10 ms or doesn’t it?

I never got started in the local chess club as a kid. If I had, I probably wouldn’t have become a 2200+ player like my son, but I wouldn’t be getting my butt kicked on chess.com quite so badly, either.

In this age of easy AI answers to everything, those of us who keep our brains fit will be successful. The rest won’t.

Jack Dorsey and Roelof Botha sound like AI. Maybe they have been replaced by AI, but nobody told us?
