A5: everyone has a different level of comfort with sharing their ideas in public. Personally I was self-conscious about how my tweets would be received, and it’s important to realize that my students might feel similarly #schmiteracies

A4: realizing that anyone can find “evidence” to support their own worldviews and ideas online, and oftentimes the angriest most radical voices are the loudest - scary. As educators, helping our students understand this and navigate these spaces with this in mind #schmiteracies

A3: students understanding when, where, and how media consumption is appropriate. That last one is the tricky part... #schmiteracies

A2: tech tools can provide more exposure to content creation, consumption, and sharing. The classroom environment needs to take into account the students’ familiarity with technologies #schmiteracies

@thispettypace Thinking about how it could be used in a way that wasn’t intended - for better or worse - and addressing that accordingly. Knowing your students’ prior exposure, experiences, and attitudes to the technologies you’re using #schmiteracies

#Schmiteracies Weekend chat Q2: Recognizing that what we teach and what we exclude are matters of justice, what kind of steps can we take to engage the identities, languages, and interests of all of our students? What texts, literacy practices, activities do we bring in?

@anterobot A1: literacies as the way we perceive and engage with the world. I want my students to know there is no one right way to interact with #math - as long as they are wrestling with ideas, questioning, and trying to see things in new ways, they are making me proud #schmiteracies

#Schmiteracies Weekend Chat!! Q1: Let's get into it with the elephant in the #schmiteracies room. Literacies - what are they tho? (How do you define it and what does it look like in your classroom?)

A6: listen to your students. Get to know their needs, hopes, fears, curiosities, interests, dreams. Start from there instead of imposing your own standards in the classroom. #schmiteracies

A5: without equal representation of standards that also explicitly articulate non-dominant literacy practices, you’re essential elevating the dominant literacy, which already has enough power as it is, and disregarding other literacies #schmiteracies

A4: when you are articulating it explicitly, you are acknowledging that this dominant language exists and in our current inequitable world it is advantageous to be literate in this way, however messed up that is #schmiteracies

A1: There’s no such thing as “being good at #math”, having a math brain, being a math person, etc. We can all be mathematicians, problem solve, think critically and logically, etc!! #schmiteracies

Beers: what are open ended ways we can help our kids improve their reading comprehension? Deloitte: you should tell us to come up with ways instead of asking us. Paris: we could start by getting them to look at each other’s backpacks Me: *nods head and listens* #schmiteracies

Textual dexterity - the ability to express one’s self using language in an effective way. What if we encouraged our students to express themselves in these creative, nontraditional ways instead of ignoring or stifling/restricting them? #schmiteracies
