Here's the way you should have handled it. When you two were hanging out together: You: hey, have you ever thought about taking this friendship/relationship up a notch, to an actual romantic relationship? Her: no, I mean I like you, but I don't feel that way about you. You: so there's no chance this could turn into something? I need you to be 100% honest. Don't hold back. Her: no I don't think so. I really do like you, but not like that. You: OK good, I just needed to make sure. I've been talking to this girl and she's wanting to take it to the next level, but I wasn't sure if I should, because I thought it might mess up any chance I had with you down the road. So with that out of the way, I need you to help me come up with a good strategy with this other girl... And just smile, and treat her like the best friend in the world. That would've left you in the most powerful position you could possibly hope to have after that rejection. It's not too late though, there are other things you can do.
