@BDSixsmith As an aside, I don't know why the Tablet included paragraphs of tedious crowing from Humanists UK and some random academic in that article, before it even gives detail from Bible Soc & Yougov about what the problem actually was. Facts are more useful than partisan point-scoring.

@BDSixsmith Whether there are still preliminary signs of a 'quiet revival' is another question. Qualitative data is one thing, but hopefully another round of polls will provide better quantitative evidence.

The "Quiet Revival" report that the Bible Society released on the back of polling from YouGov has been withdrawn on the basis of unreliable data thetablet.co.uk/news/bible-soc…

This is disappointing. But the original Yougov/Bible Society survey showed such large increases in church attendance they had to be wrong. Never put that much weight on one opinion poll. Whether there are still preliminary signs of a 'quiet revival' is another question.
Justin Brierley@JusBrierley

Gosh. This is significant… Today a major update on the Quiet Revival research from @biblesociety has been issued. It’s emerged that the YouGov data they were working with was flawed. It’s very unexpected and disappointing for all involved. Bible Society dealt perfectly honestly with the data they were originally given but say: “It was only at the beginning of March that YouGov confirmed that it failed to activate key quality control technologies that protect the sample from a wide range of errors and this undermines the reliability of the results.” You can read the statement at their website: biblesociety.org.uk/the-quiet-revi… I’m glad Bible Society are making this clear statement about the research. Given how far and wide the data has been circulated it’s important for transparency. In the final episode of our most recent season of The Surprising Rebirth Of Belief In God we did a deep dive interrogating the figures. Now we know for certain that the figures are unreliable. But, as was also mentioned in that show, it’s also important to remember that Quiet Revival was just one data point among many pointing towards a reawakening of faith in many parts of the West. The ‘rebirth’ is by no means disproved by one flawed set of data. I’ll be writing an article with more reflections on this major piece of news soon and what it means for whether we are seeing a ‘Rebirth’.

At most I can see a case for 3 unitaries, roughly South, Middle, North East. But surely no more than that!

I'm still trying to get round the fact that in 72 hours we've gone from "he lost his phone a year before the Mandelson scandal broke" to "OK, he actually lost his phone a week after we strategised how to deal with parliament trying to get his Mandelson messages".

This is totally, utterly and completely wrong. Not only would he have known, he was obliged by the government’s own regulations to ensure a copy of them was retained.

“More often than not, it is a result of cock-up rather than conspiracy." Morgan McSweeney “couldn’t have known” that his messages would in future be needed when his phone was stolen, health secretary Wes Streeting tells #TimesRadio. @WesStreeting | @KateEMcCann

I suspect this will be unpopular, but if we want to allow religion in the public square, we should do so consistently. Praying outside an abortion clinic, following @ArchbishopSarah on her pilgrimage to Canterbury or observing sunset prayers in Trafalgar Square - all should be treated as peaceful and lawful acts. Celebrating special occasions in Trafalgar Square is, in fact, a deeply British thing to do. We should be isolating the jihadi extremists, not vindicating their claim that Islam and Western democracy are incompatible.

Opposition Day debate today on the awful Plan 2 Student Loans. Charging 6.2% interest on student debt is usurious - graduates shouldn't be ripped off to fund more welfare spending. Full piece here on why Plan 2 loans are so unfair - and need to change: edrith.co.uk/p/rage-rage-ag…
Laura Trott MP@LauraTrottMP

In Jan the Chx said the student loan system was “fair & reasonable”. Weeks later it “was broken”. Now it’s not “at the front of the queue”. It should be. We are the only party with a plan to stop punishing aspiration through the student loan system & MPs can back it tonight

New data from UNICEF show that progress in reducing child mortality has slowed, but it has still declined by an incredible 60% since 1990. In 2024, 8 million fewer children died than in 1990.

Abandoning Afghanistan to the Taliban was one of the most insanely penny-wise, pound-foolish decisions of the last 20 years This wave of Afghans alone may cost £15bn over their lifetimes. And if it influenced Putin's decision to invade Ukraine then the costs are astronomical.
Charlie Cole@charliecolecc

The National Audit Office has released a report into the Afghan resettlement scheme, the findings are grim. 37,950 Afghans have already been resettled in the UK and the Government expects a further 8,632 - 9,741 to be resettled by 2030, bringing the total to 46,582 - 47,691.

Trump failed to end the Ukraine War because he refused to put pressure on Russia (stick) to make accepting a cease fire on current lines (carrot) seem a safer option. Instead he let Israel drag USA into another Middle East war, killing thousands & risking an economic crisis.

@2D0XPS The confident statement that conservative Catholicism and Evangelicalism are thriving while the moderate/liberal mainstream is collapsing does not have very much evidence behind it.

@2D0XPS Very hard to draw conclusions about liberalism vs conservatism among churches in Britain because doctrinal position varies within denominations e.g. CofE, and it's hard to count attendees at independent churches or small denominations.

This narrative is oft repeated but it's not true. The CofE and the RCs had almost identical numbers attending church on a Sunday in 2019 (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿716k; 🇻🇦702k) and have shown identical post-COVID recovery (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿573k; 🇻🇦555k). 🇻🇦figures include churches in Wales; 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 do not.

Dr. Calum Miller@DrCalumMiller

While the Church of England is disappearing into oblivion, the Catholic Church in England is bursting at the seams. One key reason is the clarity and zeal on fundamental moral issues that the Catholic bishops show. If the CoE wants to survive, a good signal would be the bishops all turning up to oppose ABORTION UP TO BIRTH in Parliament on Wednesday. See below for all the bishops' X handles - please tweet at them asking them to confirm their attendance and vote on Wednesday! Please RT this post and the one below!

So you price young people out of the labour market with huge rises in the minimum wage and national insurance. Then you subsidise employers to employ young people. Government is brilliant. Simply brilliant.

It’s actually crazy the lengths the Uniparty went to get this approved. First Westminster Council blocked it, so the Minister called it in and approved it. But then the High Court blocked it because by law Victoria Gardens has to be maintained as a public garden. So then they passed the Holocaust Memorial Act 2026 to get it done. They can just do things when they want to. They only want it to protect themselves from accusations of anti semitism anyway. The original scheme was a Cameron play to wind up Jeremy Corbyn over his anti semitism scandal.

Found out the new Holocaust Hub is in four restricted building zones. A Conservation area, Grade II listed, UNESCO (the daddy no building zone) and a ‘Monument Saturation Zone’ (too many monuments already.) Remember this when they tell us we can’t unlist the Barbican.
