I cannot begin to explain how much fuller, richer, and more beautiful my life has been since I finished graduate school. I am laughing harder and loving deeper than I ever have.

@rachelj_mu @ELindstromPhD Rachel, I agree and am glad you made progress. As a widow, I always dreaded donuts with dad events. Felt my heart was being ripped out every year when my children were reminded of our loss so publicly.

@ELindstromPhD This is the hill I will die on. I’ve had meetings upon meetings with my kids’ school about these outdated, exclusive events. I was able to make a little progress with them. Baby steps.

Keep people who have the script near you. My parents are proud. My dad, who left school after the 8th grade is searching high and low for a crystal apple to give me for earning my Ph.D. He will always see me as a teacher. I’ll take it, and I’ll appreciate his support.

Thanks for your support! Being #firstgen is hard. You always reach beyond your inner circle for support. You have to give your inner circle a break because they don’t know what you need. You need to hear, “you are the expert,” and “you got this.”

Lots of juggling this week. A little obsessing over my defense. A little obsessing over 2 #AERA2021 presentations, and back to obsessing over my defense. Oh yeah, and fretting over a platform that doesn’t want to let me in. Just breathe…. #firstgen

@VicariousLee Same...cognitive overload learning the platform while preparing my defense. Too much.

This year’s AERA is causing me more stress than usual. New system which, after 1.5 hours of training, I am told we can use PowerPoint but not shown how, my workday proceeds at home with just conference sessions mixed in, and I need to get one child to and from weird hours of
