In response to comments... no, I don't think it's a great XI & I'm not convinced they'll win, but I do understand why Howe has picked those players
Re Hall... he's been fabulous, contender for player of season. But of late (Barca away, SAFC & B'mouth) he has cost goals. He's played a lot of games, but needed to come out

Thoughts on XI are pretty clear, then. To summarise, "resignation letter" the gist of it... For me, I understand it. A strong manager picks his best XI, not the XI others want him to. The change of system/some personnel vs SAFC tallied with outside opinion & it backfired The big calls? Hall/Burn... Hall has been poor defensively of late. Keeping back 5 from last week was always likely Ramsey/Joelinton... The latter owes Howe a performance & usually comes good when needed (it's needed here) Willock on left... He was v good last week. Barnes is out of form & probably better option from bench right now Murphy on right... Howe can't play Elanga. Needs must Osula @ CF... He remains biggest threat, in terms of goals & unsettling oppo Woltemade/Wissa on bench... NW isn't an 8 & ran out of form as 9. Last time as a starter @ 10 was SAFC. Looked good last week & could be threat from bench. Wissa... Howe thinks Osula is sharper

Based on what I saw for Stuttgart, Nick Woltemade tends to do a lot more when there are other attacking players around him. I don’t know whether Newcastle would sacrifice a player from midfield to provide that support, but it’s an idea.

@jamesallcott He's a bit of a cult hero in some ways, given his transformation under Howe, but agree that we need more technical ability in midfield and someone who is better in possession than Joelinton. He's pretty sloppy with the ball.

@yourboykweezy @_EnGee Feels like Howe prioritises pace over almost any other attribute. Would've loved a more technically proficient player with ability to create. Elanga will be effective on counterattack, in theory, but not sure about games where we dominate

@stevemarsh10 @_EnGee Aye not feeling it. Murphy can be careless in possession but has a canon in both feet and his delivery can ve excellent. Yet to see what Elanga offers other than outright pace. Kudus, Semenyo, Mbuemo looking far more productive

@yourboykweezy @OfficielKaybaye Aye exactly. He'll do ok defensively at LB, but won't give the opposition anything to worry about going forward and also means Gordon will have to track back more than he would with Hall at LB.
