✨THE ORIGINS AND CREATION OF THE ASSYRIAN FLAG 💙🤍❤️
Following the establishment of the Assyrian Universal Alliance in 1968, a historic mission began to create an official national flag for the Assyrian people — a symbol that would represent their identity, heritage, unity, and enduring spirit across the world.
To fulfill this vision, the AUA called upon Assyrian artists, historians, and intellectuals worldwide to submit designs and ideas for this important national emblem. Many proposals were received from across the globe and carefully reviewed before being presented to the AUA Congress.
After extensive deliberation, one design emerged as the clear choice — a powerful blend of ancient Assyrian symbolism and modern national identity.
🇺🇸 In 1973, during the 6th AUA Congress held in Yonkers, New York, the design was officially adopted as the Assyrian national flag. The flag was created by renowned Assyrian Christian artist George Bit Atanus of Tehran, Iran, whose vision masterfully connected the glory of ancient Assyria with the hopes and aspirations of the Assyrian people today.
✨ Meaning & Symbolism
The flag features a white background symbolizing peace and purity. At its center stands a four-pointed blue star surrounding a golden circle representing Shamash, the ancient Assyrian sun god believed to be the giver of life. ☀️
The blue points of the star symbolize tranquility, harmony, and hope.
Flowing outward from the center are three wavy stripes representing the great rivers of Assyria:
💙 Euphrates — abundance and prosperity
🤍 Great Zab — peace and unity
❤️ Tigris — courage and Assyrian national pride
These flowing rays also symbolize the Assyrian diaspora spread across the four corners of the world, while their connection to the center reflects the unbreakable bond to the ancestral homeland and the hope of reunification.
🦅 Above the star appears the sacred emblem of Ashur, the supreme Assyrian deity, portrayed with outstretched wings, a drawn bow, and an arrow ready to fly — symbolizing strength, protection, and resilience. The design closely follows ancient Assyrian artwork preserved in the British Museum.
👑 Crowned above the flag is the royal insignia of the legendary Assyrian king Sargon II, representing the greatness and achievements of the Assyrian civilization throughout history.
Today, the Assyrian flag stands not only as a national symbol, but as a timeless reminder of Assyrian history, identity, perseverance, and unity. 💙🤍❤️
