Weird detail. Did someone make the landing the wrong size and hoped that no one would notice?

Exploring the amazing cantilevered staircase in the ruined part of Kirby Hall, Northamptonshire, today 😍

@katephillips29 I love that stair. Such a shame that it’s left open to the elements to deteriorate. It’s the first cantilever stone stair in the country with straight flights.

After 250 years, these timber wedges that were used to fix this tread have rotted and caused the tread to crack. Another tread in the same stair was wedged in place with iron shims, which have rusted, also causing the tread to crack. Materials matter!
