Bog cotton – or cotton grass – bobbing in the breeze is a favourite sight of summer. Look out for the distinctive fluffy white heads growing on boggy ground on heath and moorland - often a good indicator of where not to tread! 📹: ©Lorne Gill/NatureScot

Organic gardeners should just be called gardeners. Non-organic gardeners should be called chem-gardeners. Everything is the wrong way around.

During their breeding season from April to late June, you'll find curlews in open country, nesting on upland farmland and moorland. At other times of year though, they retreat mainly to coastal areas where they can eat invertebrates in the wet mud, exposed as the tides retreat.

Who says cities can't grow food? Not Detriot. In 2023, the city hired a Director of Urban Agriculure. Last year alone, city garden and farm plots provided nearly 70,000lbs of fresh produce back to their community. This is how cities prepare and develop resilience.

Peatlands. Bogs. Saltmarsh. Mudflats. Lagoons. Ponds. Floodplains. Swamps. Marshes. Mangroves. Fens. Estuaries. Wetlands come in many forms, but they *all* do incredible things for the planet, for nature and for well-being. #WorldWetlandsDay #WWD2024

Today is Imbolc, an ancient Celtic festival of fertility that heralds the halfway point between winter and spring. In Gaelic folklore, the Cailleach weaves winter's spell at this magical moment. As the goddess of winter, she will decide how much longer the cold weather lasts 🌨️

Flowering between January and March, Snowdrops are one of the first signs of spring. Although not native to the UK, the appearance of these hardy flowers has become a familiar sign that warmer weather is not far away. 🌱 #MondayMotivation 📸Sam Benson

On the dune area of the Findhorn Hinterland today there were some spectacular examples of these lichens with red apothecia (Cladonia coccifera agg.) growing in clusters together.

Thinking of hitting the slopes this winter?  This photograph from 1960 shows a very full bus taking skiers to do just that in the hills above Glenmore! 2023 marks 100 years of public ownership of Glenmore. Find more stories from the past century at forestryandland.gov.scot/blog/glenmore-…
