@Feargal_Sharkey The irony is that it is the regulators that should be privatised and keep half the fines. They would then have incentive to regulate and it would benefit them financially and the industries would soon come to heel. Current system is jobs for the boys / girls with zero teeth.

Of course if Sir James is refusing to forgo his bonus what an act of solidarity with staff it would be if the board were to donate all of their fees for 2023 to local food banks.
Adam Vaughan@adamvaughan_uk

.@JamesBevanEA, boss of the Environment Agency, said he deserved his bonus after he was asked if he would give it to staff reliant on food banks @Feargal_Sharkey: “After seven years Sir James Bevan’s reality distortion filter seems to be fully charged.” thetimes.co.uk/article/db2a05…

@Feargal_Sharkey @JamesBevanEA He doesnt do his job. He should be sacked not get a bonus. The uk waste industry is run by criminals and corrupt utility companies, its a joke. Put someone with some balls in charge who earns their money from results.

Trying to defend his bonus @JamesBevanEA told EA staff "I think [i] do [a] tough job, and do experience some stresses and strains that no one else has to carry". I suspect nothing like the stress of standing in the queue at a food bank. thetimes.co.uk/article/enviro…

@Feargal_Sharkey Waste criminals pollute with impunity but hold up a sign with your opinion and all of a sudden those that are supposed to uphold the law go into overdrive. Im sorry but no wonder people have such a poor opinion of ‘authority’

Burning trees is not renewable energy. Will BECCS work or is it greenwashing? Time will tell but one thing is certain. It will be the UK taxpayer that funds this experiment that many scientists believe will not work. If Drax are so sure it works let them pay for it. #AxeDrax
Drax@DraxGroup

Drax produces more of the UK’s renewable electricity than any other generator ⚡. BECCS at Drax will help continue to ensure energy grid stability. Find out more ⬇️

@WasteCrimeWatch More waste criminals every day now, its completely out of control. Legitimate waste operators going broke or leaving the sector because they are banging their heads against the wall. When will you wake up @EnvAgency @DefraGovUK

@stourhaven @WasteCrimeWatch Less than £3K fine & 80 hours community service. But dumped 900t of toxic waste that can cost up to £450 a tonne to remove. Here’s hoping there is a POCA order to recover the money he was paid to take this waste. What sort of message does this send to the waste criminals?

Investigating one issue after another, I get the sense that the UK just isn't working any more. Why? Because of 40 years of "deregulation". This word is a euphemism for destroying the effective capacity of the state to protect us from chancers, conmen and criminals.
George Monbiot@GeorgeMonbiot

Here’s my column on the huge but scarcely-known scandal of the UK’s illegal waste mafias. In hiding, burying and burning millions of tonnes of dangerous rubbish, they are poisoning our land, water and air. But the government looks the other way. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

@afneil DONT pay subsidies unless its really green, Drax is contentious and rightly so, numbers quoted elsewhere here show that. Keep the subsidies where they are really needed solar wind wave AD. For other generation let the market decide.

So-called biomass British power stations, of which Drax is by far the biggest, consume 7m tonnes of wooden pellets/year, is equivalent to 25m trees going up in smoke. Consumers pay £800m subsidy to make it "economic". Yet CO2 emissions huge. Tree replanting doesn't compensate.

@PropertyJedi For the record I am not paid by anyone for the work I have been doing. I do not work for any political party, environment group or charity nor I have not been ask nor am I compensated in any manner for what I am doing. To suggest otherwise could not be further from the truth.

@recyclewasteco Forests are carbon sinks - burnings trees produces carbon - the world needs to reduce carbon production - burning trees to produce electricity and calling it green is bollox - transporting those trees half way round the world to burn them is total bollox.

We have been shouting this out for years. There is no logic to this practice. The UK is no longer in the EU & therefore do not have to follow the mistake of classifying biomass as a green & renewable feedstock. Plus the greenwashing that comes out of Drax is disgraceful.

@PeopleVLitter It is time that all waste exports were banned, period. If you cant deal with / recycle your own waste within your borders youve got your plan wrong or frankly you are making too much waste!
