MUSIC REVIEW Swans - The Burning World (1989) I think of ‘Children of God’ as Swans’ ‘Schopenhauerian’ album, and ‘White Light From the Mouth of Infinity’ as their ‘Nietzschean’ album; ‘The Burning World’ represents an intermediate stage, and so could perhaps be called their ‘Untimely Meditations’ album, lol. Love, rather than power, is the chief theme, particularly on the beautiful ’Saved’ and ‘The River That Runs With Love Won’t Run Dry.’ ‘Jane Mary, Cry One Tear’, the musical highpoint, is a wistful and hypnotic centrifuge unfortunately derailed somewhat by a tarnishing chorus. Darker pieces are studded here and there, like ‘See No More’, and ’(She’s A) Universal Emptiness’, about an enigmatic figure who is soulless, yet also a kind of divine who is the ‘mother of us all’. The finale, ‘God Damn the Sun’, combines darkness and love, and is justly one of their most famous pieces, a deeply personal dirge about the death of a superior friend: ‘I miss your arrogance/And I need your intellignece/And your hate for authority/But now you’re gone...’ Gira apparently dislikes ‘The Burning World’, proving that artists aren’t always good judges of their own work! #MichaelGira #Jarboe
