Arbeloa had decided to start Asencio against Elche, but on the day of the match, shortly before the team's usual morning warm-up session, Asencio suddenly appeared in Arbeloa's office accompanied by a doctor, and informed the manager that he had some minor muscle discomfort and didn't feel fit to play, which really upset Arbeloa. Arbeloa then informed Rudiger, who was supposed to rest, that he now had to play against Elche, which really upset Rudiger, as he's extremely strict with his planning and match preparation protocol. Arbeloa then dropped Asencio against Elche, City and Atletico, even though he was training normally, and the reason for that is that Asencio failed to apologize to the team for criticizing Arbeloa's decision to bench him against Man City. Asencio then apologized to Arbeloa , but the manager asked him to do so in front of the group. Until he did, he wouldn't be called up. The situation became more entrenched than expected because Asencio didn't feel he had to apologize to his teammates. And he didn't do so initially. "Does anyone have anything to say?" Arbeloa asked at the end of one of the huddles before training, hoping to prompt Asencio's apology. The center-back lowered his head and didn't speak. So Arbeloa kept dropping him. Asencio then finally decided, after the intl break, to put an end to the matter and apologize to the team for what happened with Arbeloa after the Manchester City game and his subsequent last-minute withdrawal against Elche.
