It’s about land and housing being turned into a pure commodity. When land prices are astronomically due to rental market speculation it makes it impossible for cash strapped councils to invest sufficiently into building council homes. There’s also the issue of developer state capture at the local level.

Julia Hartley-Brewer loses it when I mention Britain had national rent controls from 1915-1988 building 300–350k homes a year. Since 1988, we built 200k a year. The Greens’ policy to reintroduce rent controls would finally let councils build again not treating housing as an asset
