Who are pavements for?

I popped down to Soho today. An already notoriously difficult area (for its lack of dropped kerbs) has been made trickier with outdoor seating blocking pavements. I support the hospitality sector and understand the need for outdoor seats, but please leave room for wheelies!

I fail to understand how any council (@bathnes) or maintenance contractor can consider this an acceptable state to leave a pavement. No ramp, no barriers & no alternative route.

@TheRehn @bathdigital For the final installation there is audio built in. We have been recording interviews with participants which will feature. We are still researching physical tactile maps with raised printing. As for the digital app, we plan on adding alternative screen-reader versions of the map

@stupid_cities @bathdigital My Mum had a question about whether any audio is being included as that's her preference as a visually-impaired person.

@bathdigital had some technical problems watching the @stupid_cities talk, tried ipad and laptop, but couldn’t get fullscreen to work or question box. Was working ok earlier on. Not sure what to do to resolve? Watching with people with accessibility needs who need fullscreen.

@TheRehn @bathdigital Hi Ruth, sorry to hear there were problems. Frustrating having to fight technology to function in the way you need. I'm sure Bath Digital will investigate, but I'll chase this up and investigate myself for future streamed events.

@Grace_Quantock I’m guessing this is using your data @wheelmap? Or consuming from the added open street map data? I hope the amazing efforts of @wheelmap are recognised & it’s noted disabled people did not wait for Google to solve their problems, they have already been solving them themselves

I’m always surprised that the tar poop curbs are considered safe. For me I cannot use them, too steep, melted, not level & not flush. Is this helpful for you? I often see them used as temporary & quick fixes for street works which live on after #StupidCities

@GeorginaRannard I’ve been using roads with a ♿️, the only way to maintain a choice about keeping distance when people don’t. Unfortunately it means danger with cars but that’s a normal experience navigating cities. Pavements where wheelchair+person can pass with social distancing are few
