@sapphictidus Rule of thumb for RPGs is be at least 5 levels higher than enemies/bosses in new areas.
We also had official strategy guides and online ones (GameFAQs) that detail how to prepare before the next area.
Also, we just didn’t have as many distractions then as we do now.

@eatskolnikov @MaxKriegerVG The attitude of most projects at the time just saved the final product. Archiving everything is fairly recent.
The backgrounds for FF7-9 came from higher quality assets before they compressed them to fit standard CRT resolution. All that remained were the lowres backgrounds.

if we're talking about things that get "lost" in ps2 ports...
final fantasy x on the ps2 actually had very detailed facial/performance capture, generations ahead of its time.
when new models were created for ffxhd, that old capture data couldn't be used... and got thrown out!

@eatskolnikov @MaxKriegerVG It wasn’t thrown out for being unusable. Most companies at the time just didn’t future proof their assets/projects. Industry ran on churning out new products and had no idea that nostalgia (remakes/remasters) would keep everything relevant for years/decades.

@MaxKriegerVG If it got thrown out it probably wasn't usable. Perhaps due to scaling issues, the animations may look weird on higher resolutions. Also, back in the day CRTs did a lot of heavy lifting to make the images look good. They should probably just let us have ported original version
