Is Morgan McSweeney’s job on the line? The Epstein files have unveiled yet more information on Peter Mandelson’s relationship with the paedophile financier. On this, reports from last year note that Keir Starmer’s chief of staff ‘pleaded’ with the PM not to sack Mandelson from his ambassador job – he played a role in the initial appt – despite evidence that the Labour veteran retained his friendship with Epstein after the latter’s conviction. Meanwhile questions remain (as per @thetimes) over Matthew Doyle’s friendship with convicted paedophile Sean Morton. McSweeney was warned about Doyle’s links to Morton, and yet the peerage was awarded anyway. There have been other, unrelated instances of questionable judgement by No.10, including McSweeney’s name being brought up over briefing wars (which ultimately backfired). McSweeney – founder of thinktank Labour Together and husband of Scottish Labour MP Imogen Walker – was lauded as Labour’s campaign guru and widely credited for the party’s landslide victory in 2024. But with his credibility thrown into doubt of late, Starmer may decide it’s better to retire his top aide sooner than later. The question is whether the latest Epstein/Mandelson revelations will be the tipping point.
