How can we sharply accelerate the rate of global reforestation and soil restoration, in order to cool the planet and be able to return it to future generations?
Why is this critical?
Because global warming has arrived way ahead of schedule and is now spiraling out of control.
And deforestation and soil depletion, which are also out of control, are in fact global warming's most important silent partners.
Indeed, if we fail to act now, and deforestation and soil depletion continue at their current pace, the Earth is likely to become completely uninhabitable within the lifetimes of our grandchildren.
Fortunately, there is much that we can do about it right now, without waiting for the fossil fuel industry, or "green tech," or “carbon pricing,” let alone for “small modular reactors,”fusion,giant solar parasols, “salting the clouds,”or "direct air capture.”
In other words, "climate justice,” a key G20 concern, is not just for our contemporaries.
It must be intergenerational.
As Wendell Berry reminded us in 1971, Planet Earth is “...borrowed from our children.”
And from their children... and from all future generations of humans and other species. We therefore have a duty to pass it on in good working order….”
