Additionally the Friends of Tracking YouTube channel has a good discussion by @JaviOnData, @suds_g, @PeraltaFran23, @pascal_bauer, and @Soccermatics (all working at clubs or for federations) on this very subject: youtube.com/watch?v=9J8CwO…

Highly recommend this course to create a strong base of the applied nexus between math and football

Update: Good news, our approach for EPV in soccer has been published in the Machine Learning Journal. We updated the previous version with more information and clearer explanations. And it's available with Open Access! You can take a look at it here: link.springer.com/article/10.100…

NEW: An update from me about all the stuff going on at @StatsBomb right now.
Includes information around the SB Conference in October, and especially juice tidbits about the data we are releasing for the research paper contest.

My final act at @Harvard was to design and teach a new course, Stat 143: Sports Analytics. It was a lot of work but a great experience, and I particularly enjoyed reading the students' final projects. 1/2

As part of a study of EDI in the sports analytics sector I'm involved in at the UofT, we're trying to get as many people working in sports analytics to take this survey as possible: sportsanalytics.utoronto.ca/edi-survey/
Would greatly appreciate if you would share this with your SA networks!

@seeaanoconnor @douglashagey1 @Soccermatics I think Sean has a nice approach.....things like Azure Data Warehouse help, but using Azure data lake gen 2 for fast access blob storage is a cheap and effective method .. not everything needs to be structured (I came from msft so i am biased towards azure)
English

@douglashagey1 @Soccermatics @suds_g yeah true, I opt to use s3 instead of a db sometimes due to the fast access. Possibly a batch loader yielding only the data when it’s needed could help
English

Hey @Soccermatics and @suds_g, in dealing with lots of tracking data over time one of the biggest issues is disk/database space. It simply gets out of control very quickly. Any suggestions on best practices to deal with this? DB compression or other tricks? Thanks!

🚨New sample game🚨
On Thursday @MetricaSports announced a 3rd sample game.
Why is this interesting you might wonder? There are already 2 out, a 3rd one doesn't seem like a big deal.
Wrong! This game allows you to experiment with codeball and data driven video analysis!

@strengthofsci It's a pleasure to speak to you! You are *the* curator of what's going on in the world and wishing you many amazing podcasts to come :)
English

Thanks for having me on @strengthofsci! The trick in the coming seasons will be integrating the information we get from a technical, tactical, and physical perspective and how that influences the decision making around on the ball actions and positioning

@SeidlOnSports @EightyFivePoint @SloanSportsConf It was thanks to @JaviOnData and the Barca conference. Laurie and I met there and had a list of 10 or so projects to potentially collaborate on. We focused on one and then sorted out the logistics between club and university to make it official.
English

@suds_g @EightyFivePoint @SloanSportsConf Congratulations! That’s a good point, Suds. Out of interest your collaboration was more a personal one between the two of you than an official research project between Benfica and Harvard?

It was really excited to present our paper at @SloanSportsConf this year, and am absolutely thrilled that @suds_g and I finished in first place in the research paper competition. #SSAC21
