Pleased this was published 👇. It seems we need to keep reminding the authorities that in NHS hospitals, women take responsibility for care of their newborn(s) after: c-section obstetric haemorrhage injury birth of twins/multiples Extreme sleep deprivation !!! #bringbacknurseries

@Laal87616 @jabberwock951 The 800,000 lives figure is just a calculation invented in a paper by breastfeeding advocates in the Lancet in 2016, which has been accepted as gospel truth ever since and endlessly trotted out. The fact that they have to rely on it and can't point to stronger evidence is telling

@jabberwock951 @sue_haddon I doubt that increased breastfeeding rates will save 800,000 lives in developed countries w/ access to clean water, a developed healthcare system & good sanitation. This figure from RCM is misleading & easy for vulnerable women to misinterpret. Deliberately, I suspect.

Come with me and you'll be in a world of pure imagination! 🌈 🪄 🎶! Meanwhile, in reality - insufficient intake is common - there's no good evidence breastfeeding support helps (by midwives/anyone else) - women's goals are overwhelmingly to ensure their babies are fed & thrive

@MidwivesRCM Near-universal?! As @MidwivesRCM, you surely know that: - breastfeeding insufficiencies are common - they're a leading risk factor for infant readmission <28 days of life. - Many UK women don't start breastfeeding or stop early finding it intolerable. Do you plan to force them?!

@sue_haddon Totally weird & dehumanising. How are they going to 'achieve' the 'near universal' rates of breastfeeding without coercing/forcing women? There are many valid reasons that women can't/won't breastfeed. This completely ignores that.

@Laal87616 It is, isn't it??? Weird and dehumanising. Though I suppose in some ways that captures the experience of breastfeeding support for many women.

Sir Brian Langstaff has closed the infected blood inquiry today. His letter to ministers includes a really fascinating appendix commentary on his view on public inquiries going forward: infectedbloodinquiry.org.uk/sites/default/…

Who would give good information on post dates pregnancy? Qualified midwives & obstetricians who carry out inductions? Or hypnotherapist with no qualifications in midwifery or obstetrics, who doesn't carry out inductions & who's never responsible for the outcome?

V. worrying unqualified people with ideological stances on "normal" birth are positioning themselves as experts, telling women that if they decline induction their baby won't die, advertising their course as the answer to avoiding issues during birth...

If we look at the Post Office scandal, a probe into NHS legal teams & lawyers acting on behalf of the NHS might be something that needs doing. A statutory public inquiry would be able to do that. @wesstreeting
Catherine Roy@catherineroyuk

Smoke and mirrors. 🧵 "we need a clear & explicit code of conduct for all legal professionals working for, or on behalf of, the NHS" How would a legal NHS Code of conduct sit with SRA & BSB? Would lawyers' obligations be to the NHS or SRA/BSB first? 1/

Catherine is spot on here. If lawyers acting for the NHS are behaving badly it's because they are instructed to do so by the NHS. Yet again, the only real solution is for NHS leaders to be truly accountable for their decisions. Anything else is tinkering around the edges.
Catherine Roy@catherineroyuk

"This should make clear that their duties extend beyond their client to the public interest in establishing the truth." Their client would be the NHS. Lawyers respond to their client's instructions. It's not lawyers who need an incentive to establish the truth, it's the NHS. 3/

@DrAnnieHickox @DrSdeG Oh yes, needless to say, the government's manipulative breastfeeding and bonding lie is the worst (e.g. 👇)! And yes, that had a big impact on me. But honestly, the fevered obsession with bonding being terribly urgent and fragile was just as oppressive for me.

@DrAnnieHickox @DrSdeG Yes. The image above is from the NHS website. Gov agencies have taken on the idea that all families need copious advice on attachment - informed by 'infant mental health' charities and the 'first 1000 days' movement. I don't think this is helpful and for some actively harmful.

@DrAnnieHickox @DrSdeG Bowlby’s theories were so misunderstood. They became tied to mother blame, but attachment was never about a perfect mother/child bond. Children form multiple attachments across family and community, and healthy development includes rupture and repair, not perfection.
