There will always be weirdos/outliers/misfits. The people who are this way naturally won’t mind being marginalized, since the defining trait is not needing mainstream approval. But if you make weirdos high-status, then some fraction of approval-concerned normies will mimic them superficially. But because they’re not real weirdos and are deeply concerned with mainstream approval, they’ll be uncomfortable when most people think they’re weird for whatever weirdo-signifiers they’ve adopted. So they’ll demand that these things no longer be considered weird or marginal. This is how weirdness ends up being culturally centered, and it’s bad for everyone. The real weirdos don’t like the infiltration of their weirdo subcultures, the mimics generally end up hurting themselves with weirdo stuff they can’t handle, and mainstreaming draws more normies into weirdness who also generally end up hurting themselves. And once it’s sufficiently widespread, it doesn’t even seem cool or transgressive anymore. Weirdness should be marginalized and frowned upon. The only people who should actually be doing it won’t care.
