think it just coincided with the rise of lgbt asian media online in general. especially with yuri. there’s a lot of lesbian shows and books coming out of east + SE asia where in the west many things get cancelled after a season.

@lyhyolanda I just still associate fictional things with the words gay & lesbian because they’re adjectives that can describe whatever the media is. Also as someone who’s been in fandom/fandom adjacent (?) since 2012 ppl just called stuff gay or slash (f/f or m/m)

@suisrenaissance Did not say that they weren’t I specified that yaoi and yuri are terms that mean boys/girls love and are terms that are genres of media. They aren’t sexual orientations its a genre that depicts these relationships.

@suisrenaissance One can see the reasons why that language is co-opted and used more frequently than the standard phrases if one has eyes to see the world of today through the events of yesterday - not seeing the world one wants to see.
