Today we recall the crimes committed by the criminal Ba’athist regime of Saddam against the people of Iraq. These crimes extended across the entire homeland and claimed the lives of thousands of martyrs in the mass graves, the Shaabaniyya Uprising (1991), the Halabja massacre, the Anfal campaigns, the assassination of scholars, and the targeting of religious and national forces. They are bloody chapters in Iraq’s history that remind us of our duty to honor the martyrs, preserve the nation’s memory, and build a future worthy of their sacrifices. Alongside these immense sacrifices, Iraqis continued to give for their country even after the fall of the dictatorship, as they confronted waves of terrorism and systematic crimes committed by remnants of the former regime and the terrorist gangs of Daesh, which represented a continuation of the crimes of the defunct regime. As we remember these crimes and sacrifices, we stand before them with reverence and pride, for they paved the way for the freedom of our country and the dignity of its proud people, who today live under a pluralistic democratic system in which constitutional and legal rights are guaranteed. We pledge to our people across our beloved homeland that we will continue along the path of reconstruction and development, safeguard public and private freedoms, protect the sovereignty of our country, and prevent the return of dictatorship in any form or under any pretext. Mercy, forgiveness, and eternal glory to the martyrs of Iraq. Shame and disgrace upon dictatorship and its criminal accomplices.
