As you can see, darling Gabriel looks like a different hog now.
That frail little dying waif who arrived here just before Easter is gone, and cheeky happy Gabriel now weighs an amazing 1030g.
Now his chest is clear and his breathing is normal I have started giving him treatment baths for his ringworm.
His scabby nose, crusty ears and baldness in his coat of spines, around where it meets his fur skirt, will soon be a thing of the past, too.

I forgot to update you on darling Palmer, whose release was delayed due to an eye infection.
As he's a local boy, he was released from an open pen in the lodge here.
You can see him keenly sniffing the air, licking his nose to intensify the scent (a wet nose is more effective at capturing, dissolving, and holding scent particles from the air, which allows Palmer to better analyze his environment).
You can also see him occasionally standing stock still, holding his breath, to intently listen.
As soon as he realises where he is, that he's safe and that there may be some girls around for him to court, he's off.🥰
Godspeed, dear Palmer, till next time.

Oh would you just look at this darling boy!🥹
When I came down this morning and saw the state of Gabriel's pen, my heart sank.
I thought he had relapsed.
It was trashed, and this usually happens when a hedgehog is in so much pain they desperately try running away from it, wrecking the pen in an effort to escape.
But when I reviewed the tapes (thank goodness for CCTV!) this is what I saw...
That little darling was trying to nest build!
Still so frail, yet feeling well enough to want to make his bed himself, the way he likes it.
But instead of picking up just the newspaper strips I'd left in for him, he was catching the pen liner and dragging that in too!😊

Foxes may be seen more frequently in our gardens now as mum fox, who has been confined to her den feeding her cubs round the clock for weeks, and relying on dad and other family members to bring her food, is finally free to go out and forage herself.
Foxes are true omnivores, so as well as small rodents and insects, their diverse diet includes fruits and berries.
So mum fox will eat varied foods, as well as taking some home to her babies in the den, so they experience a wide choice of nutrients and tastes.
Just as we wean our babies by putting the food we eat in a food processor, to break it down and liquify it, so she will chew up and swallow the food she collects for them.
When mum arrives home the excited cubs will lick at her lips, encouraging her to regurgitate her liquified meal for them.
Here you can see these mums are enjoying some halved apples I put out for them (yes, you know those ones we all have in the fridge, bought in a spurt of 'healthy eating' shopping and have sat there ever since).
One mum even prefers the apples to the Bonio biscuit!
Apples and pears are good occasionally, but dry cat or dog food is a great staple food to leave out as it's a safe balanced meal for every garden visitor, and will help stop hungry mums raiding the hedgehog feeders.🥰

Spend a little time with our cats and some of the team as they carry out their daily work.
I think I'd like Rawans job the best 🤔 How about you?

Every phone call I've taken this week has broken my heart a little bit more.
So much unnecessary suffering.
Please spread this information, as far and wide as you can.
You may save a life.
🙏
A hedgehog *out in the open* in the day is in serious trouble and needs urgent help.
Always.
No exceptions.
Any size.
Any time.
Hedgehogs are nocturnal prey animals, they have no defences in the daytime, it's deadly dangerous for them.
They are designed to hunt at night, to navigate and catch insects in the dark, occupying a specific ecological niche.
They are not adapted to withstand high temperatures, and their shape means they rapidly dehydrate during daylight hours.
They are nocturnal animals.
So they don't come out in the day simply because they're hungry, or lost, or disturbed, or to move nests, or are pregnant, or for any other trivial reason.
They come out in the day because it's warmer than the night and they are feeling cold.
Deadly cold.
They're feeling cold because they're so sick they're starting to die, and hypothermia is a stage of dying. Blood has been redirected to the vital organs, keeping them alive as long as possible, leaving the limbs feeling cold.
If you see a hedgehog like this, out in the open, in the day time, no matter how 'well' he looks, it is an emergency.
Every minute counts.
DO NOT put them in a box and keep them, feeding them, not calling a rescue for advice for 3 days until their agony and infection is too much for them to bear and they stop moving.
DO NOT feed them then move them under a bush because you think they shouldn't be in the sun, leaving them, utterly defenceless, to be predated alive there.
DO NOT take them to a vet, none of whom are trained in wildlife and will simply put to sleep even viable wild animals.
Please take them to a rescue (never a vet) URGENTLY.
Just Google 'hedgehog rescue near me' to find a list.
