The Abominable Snow Cat (L'horrible chat des neiges). Artist: Albert Dumouchel, 1969. Medium: Woodcut. Collection: Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The work’s title, The Abominable Snow Cat, is a nod to the legend of the Abominable Snowman -- the Yeti -- which was capturing imaginations across the globe at the time. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, people were absolutely obsessed with the idea of discovering a mysterious, massive beast in the Himalayas. In fact, in 1969, the very year Dumouchel created this piece, the "Minnesota Iceman" saga was making waves across North America. A traveling carnival exhibit owned by Frank D. Hansen was making the rounds, displaying a hairy humanoid frozen inside a block of ice. While people searched for massive bipedal beasts on mountain peaks, the artist conceived his own snow monster. His monster, however, is just a small, grumpy house cat that doesn't like walking in the snow.
