Kim Hyeyoon's trustworthy transformation...Confirmed in
#김혜윤 #KimHyeYoon #살목지 #Salmokji
Actress Kim Hyeyoon, who has consistently graced both the big and small screens with characters of entirely different textures, has ventured into the horror genre for the first time with ‘Salmokji’. Known for her constant reinvention and refusal to be typecast, she is once again captivating audiences with a fresh new look that pleasantly defies expectations.
Hyeyoon made her return to the big screen after a four-year hiatus since ‘Ditto’ (2022), taking on the lead role of Suin in the film ‘Salmokji’. Having built a diverse filmography by taking on various genres and characters over the years, she has successfully broadened her range once again, delivering a compelling performance that adds a fresh dimension to her first foray into the horror genre.
Kim Hyeyoon, who plays the role, appears with a stark, expressionless face that instantly captures the audience’s attention. This is because, having previously showcased her bubbly charm in romantic comedies through precise diction and steady acting skills, she now exudes a chilling aura unlike anything seen in her previous works.
She then meticulously and delicately portrays the character’s gradual transformation: initially maintaining a composed emotional demeanour, only for her rational inner world to begin cracking under the bizarre phenomena unfolding at Salmokji. This is achieved not through over-reliance on horror tropes or exaggerated emotional displays from supporting characters, but through subtle physical details such as a slightly faltering breath, a shift in her gaze, or trembling fingertips.
True to her reputation as a ‘chemistry fairy’, she also boasts excellent chemistry with Lee Jongwon. Playing former lovers Suin and Kitae, the pair reveal the subtle emotions within their relationship through just a few lines of dialogue, focusing solely on escaping Salmokji together.
Throughout this process, the way they look at one another, Kitae’s blind determination and Suin’s stance, leaves room for interpretation and piques the audience’s interest. Furthermore, this emotional thread adds an unexpected touch of romance to the horror without undermining the tension of the drama.
In this way, she steers the film with stability, delicately portraying everything from the desperate struggle to maintain one’s sanity amidst extreme terror, expressed with restraint, to the inner turmoil that inevitably leads to a gradual collapse. In particular, she convincingly portrays a character whose reactions to fear, rather than actions that instill it, take center stage, creating an immersive experience that leaves viewers holding their breath and unable to let go of the tension until the very end.
