@SandraSavocch @superwhisperer Great tips! I’d add—build a community of supporters: people who run writing intensives, the academic skills team, the library, counselling, good copyeditors etc. They can’t replace supervisors’ specialist guidance, but they can deal with some aspects of support so you can focus.

@SandraSavocch so agree! And the learn to say no really resonates with me! BUT (as a former grad studies coord.!) we both know that is much harder than it sounds - primary supervisors leave, & a student is now desperately seeking supervision.. it’s tough, & good people say yes & are overworked

@superwhisperer Where to I start? As a grad studies coordinator I feel their pain. Tips- ensure each student has at least 2 discipline specific supervisors on their team; keep a close eye on progress reports and nip issues in the bud early; learn to say no and try not to feel sorry for everyone.

@orangecanton i agree. having a honest conversation at the beginning and throughout is so important - the challenge for ‘rescue’ supervisors is they are not the lead/ principle or original team.. and end up doing much more supervision (often outside their research field) than envisioned.
