Arnav Khaire, 19, was a first-year science student at Kelkar College, Mulund. According to his father, he was travelling to college in a local train when a minor argument with a few passengers escalated into language chauvinism. They assaulted him for speaking in Hindi, an unexpected and deeply jarring experience for a teenager who had never faced such aggression. The suddenness of the attack, the humiliation, and the fear of being targeted for something as basic as language created an intense psychological shock. Overwhelmed, Arnav got off at Thane, took another, and went home. Even hours later, he remained visibly distressed. He told his father he was scared, uneasy, and experiencing intense anxiety, classic signs of acute stress after a traumatic event. Despite his father’s reassurance, the emotional aftermath was too heavy. Arnav couldn’t process the sudden psychological blow and died by suicide. Now Arnav will never speak Hindi again. I hope that makes those chauvinists feel satisfied.
