Happy to share my first PhD paper on behavioral change of #Heliconius butterflies to their predatory bird calls doi.org/10.1016/j.bepr… We show that Heliconius melpomene changed their behavior in response to the calls of Rufous-tailed jacamars /1n

but not to Eastern and tropical kingbird calls. Male Heliconius melpomene increased their fluttering and walking behaviors during the playback of the jacamar calls. #Heliconis #behavior #antipredatory #Butterfly #auditory

@BeetzJerome @AaronJCorcoran You are absolutely right! Nothing is known as to whether Heliconius can differentiate btw calls. However, in general, other Nymphalids cannot hear very well beyond a certain frequency which may be happening here.

@sushant_potdar Wonder how they acoustically differentiate bird species. Anything known, whether Heliconius is sensitive to certain call rates as it is known from moth-bat arm race? I guess a discrimination based on freuqency might be unrealistic when considering moth ears. @AaronJCorcoran
