Communist Hate for Vande Mataram Communists and their descendants liberals believe in internationalism. They hate Vande Mataram, the National Song of India. Where does it stem from? The verdict on the song as well as Bankim Chandra was pronounced by Muzaffar Ahmad (1889-1973). He was the official founder (and a member of the Bengal Provincial Khilafat Committee in his erstwhile avatar. He writes in his autobiography [1]: "The revolutionary terrorists of Bengal drew their fiery inspiration from Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s Anandamath. Yet this very book, from beginning to end, is saturated with communal venom. Its central mantra was Bankim Chandra’s immortal song *Vande Mataram*, which proclaims: “In your arms, O Mother, resides Strength; In your heart, O Mother, dwells Devotion. We build your image in temple after temple. You are Durga, the ten-armed bearer of weapons...” How could any monotheistic Muslim youth ever chant such a mantra?" In the 1930s, the Muslim League began branding Bankim Chandra as “communal,” claiming that Vande Mataram promoted idolatry. Muzaffar Ahmed simply sang in tune with them. Here is what most people do not know. A young Bengali Muslim poet—Kazi Nazrul Islam (1899-1976)—a friend of Muzaffar Ahmed—wrote with soaring reverence on Vande Mataram and Bankim Chandra [2]: “Sri Chaitanya swept the world away in waves of divine love. Bankim Chandra, however, made even the bound and imprisoned soul laugh and weep in its very chains. He painted with flawless mastery both the inner and outer reality of man. In this, Bankim Chandra stands as a true Rishi and Muni. "In a stagnant pond that had lost all pull toward the ocean, he made the lotus of joy bloom. He infused it with the power and thirst to break its surrounding barriers. "The immense abundance of this very power found immortal expression in the words of *Vande Mataram*. The same song that had dreamed of turning seven crore Bengalis into the vanguard of a new Mahabharata breathed life and fire into the entire nation of India.” No wonder, Nazrul was a freedom fighter and nationalist and Muzaffar Ahmad was a communist! #भोजशाला पिछले वर्ष जब मैं सोमनाथ मंदिर की यात्रा पर गया था, तब वहाँ के उस जीर्ण-शीर्ण संग्रहालय में कुछ घंटे ऐसे बीते थे, मानो मैं पत्थरों के बीच नहीं, इतिहास की चिताओं के मध्य खड़ा हूँ। टूटी प्रतिमाएँ, खंडित स्तंभ, विदीर्ण शिलालेख सब मौन थे, किंतु उनका मौन किसी रणभेरी से कम प्रचंड न था। उनमें से एक भग्न प्रतिमा ने मुझे रोक लिया। उसके नीचे एक पंक्ति अंकित थी: “यह प्राचीन अवशेष सोमनाथ के एक #मौलवी के घर से प्राप्त हुआ।” बस, वही क्षण था जब भीतर कोई ज्वालामुखी फूट पड़ा। लगा जैसे सहस्र वर्षों का अपमान एक साथ मेरी छाती पर आ गिरा हो। कौन जाने कितनी देवमूर्तियाँ, कितने आराध्य विग्रह, कितने युगों की साधना, किसी के आँगन में पत्थर समझ कर पड़ी रहीं होंगी; किसी चूल्हे की राख में दब गई होंगी; किसी कसाई की दुकान पर मांस तोलने का आधार बनी होंगी। देवताओं का यह अपमान केवल पत्थरों का अपमान नहीं था,यह उस सभ्यता का तिरस्कार था जिसने कभी मानव को देवत्व तक उठाने का स्वप्न देखा था। कल जब भोजशाला पर न्यायालय का निर्णय आया, तो मन में एक विचित्र कंपन हुआ। प्रसन्नता भी, पीड़ा भी। प्रसन्नता इसलिए कि जो सत्य टूटे स्तंभों में, भग्न मूर्तियों में, ध्वस्त दीवारों में स्पष्ट दिखाई देता है, उसे अंततः न्याय ने स्वीकार किया। और पीड़ा इसलिए कि इस सत्य को सिद्ध करने में हमें शताब्दियाँ लग गईं। भोजशाला के खंभों को देख कर कोई अंधा भी बता सकता है कि वे माँ वाग्देवी के मंदिर के अंग हैं, किसी खानगाह के नहीं। उन पर उकेरी गई आकृतियाँ, उनकी स्थापत्य रेखाएँ, उनका मौन वैभव, सब चीख-चीख कर कहते हैं कि यहाँ कभी सरस्वती की वीणा झंकृत होती थी। यहाँ शब्दों का यज्ञ होता था। यहाँ राजा भोज की सभाएँ लगती थीं, जहाँ विद्या राजमुकुट धारण करती थी। किन्तु इतिहास का दुर्भाग्य देखिए?जिस प्रकार “कहाँ राजा भोज, कहाँ गंगू तेली” जैसी कहावत को विकृत कर दिया गया, उसी प्रकार भोजशाला को भी काल ने तोड़-मरोड़ कर किसी और नाम से पुकारना प्रारंभ कर दिया। परंतु सत्य का स्वभाव बड़ा विचित्र है। उसे दबाया जा सकता है, उस पर धूल डाली जा सकती है, किंतु उसे मारा नहीं जा सकता। वह राख के नीचे दबी अग्नि की भाँति अवसर की प्रतीक्षा करता है। यह संघर्ष केवल भोजशाला का नहीं है। यह उस समूची चेतना का संघर्ष है जो पिछले आठ सौ वर्षों से अपने ही ध्वंसावशेषों के बीच खड़ी होकर स्वयं को पहचानने का प्रयत्न कर रही है। राम जन्मभूमि उसका एक पड़ाव था। ज्ञानवापी, कृष्ण जन्मभूमि, विजयमंडल, संभल, बदायूँ और न जाने कितने ऐसे स्थान,यह सूची अंतहीन है। हर भग्न मंदिर मानो अपने पुनर्जागरण की प्रतीक्षा में है। देव अभी लुप्त हैं। उन्हें पुनः चेतन करने में समय लगेगा। किंतु जिस हिंदू समाज ने सहस्र वर्षों की आँधियाँ झेल कर भी अपनी स्मृति जीवित रखी हो, उसे पराजित कौन कर सकता है? इतिहास के धूमिल आकाश में आज भी राजा भोज की छाया खड़ी है, अडिग, गौरवपूर्ण। और ऐसा प्रतीत होता है मानो माँ वाग्देवी अब भी अपने भग्न मंदिर के खंडहरों में बैठी प्रतीक्षा कर रही हों कि उनके पुत्र फिर उठें, अपनी स्मृति पहचानें, और उस भूमि को पुनः ज्ञान, शौर्य और स्वाभिमान की भूमि बनाएँ। यात्रा लंबी है। पथ कठिन है। किंतु यह भूमि उन लोगों की है जिन्होंने राख से उठना सीखा है।अतः दीप बुझने मत दीजिए। स्मृति मरने मत दीजिए। और यदि समय पुकारे तो अपने भीतर सोए हुए पुरुषार्थ को जगा दीजिए। क्योंकि सभ्यताएँ तलवार से नहीं मरतीं, वे तब मरती हैं जब उनकी संताने स्मरण करना छोड़ देती है।
