The policies that disadvantaged Indigenous soldiers—such as exclusion from land grants, segregation in RSL clubs, and forced return to missions—were not necessarily enacted with personal hatred toward Indigenous individuals. Instead, they were rooted in a systemic belief in racial hierarchy, where Indigenous people were seen as “lesser” and in need of “protection” or assimilation. For example, the Aboriginal Protection Boards, which controlled Indigenous lives, operated under the guise of “welfare” but in practice stripped Indigenous people of autonomy. The confiscation of reserve land for soldier settlements was framed as a pragmatic decision to support white veterans and national growth, not as a deliberate attack on Indigenous veterans. However, the effect was the same: Indigenous soldiers were systematically excluded from the benefits their white comrades received. At the time, many Australians, including policymakers, didn’t see these policies as unjust because they aligned with the prevailing worldview. The idea of terra nullius (that Australia was “empty” before British colonization) underpinned much of the legal framework, including land distribution policies. This doesn’t mean there was no malice at all—individual acts of racism, like barring Indigenous veterans from RSL clubs, often carried personal prejudice—but the broader system wasn’t designed with the explicit intent to “punish” Indigenous soldiers. Rather, it was built on an assumption that Indigenous people didn’t belong in the same societal structure as white Australians. White soldiers also faced challenges post-WWI, as I noted in my previous response. Many struggled with failed settlement schemes, economic hardship, and lack of mental health support (what we’d now call PTSD). These issues weren’t due to malice but to inadequate planning and resources. However, white soldiers were still afforded opportunities—like eligibility for land grants and access to social spaces—that Indigenous soldiers were denied. The disparity wasn’t about targeting Indigenous veterans for punishment; it was about a system that didn’t even consider them as equal recipients of post-war benefits. Australia’s history, while imperfect, doesn’t always reflect malicious intent. The treatment of Indigenous soldiers post-WWI was shaped by systemic racism, but it wasn’t necessarily a deliberate plot to harm them. Policies like the soldier settlement schemes were designed with white veterans in mind because the government and society at the time didn’t see Indigenous people as equal participants in the nation’s future. This was a failure of empathy and justice, but it’s not the same as intentional cruelty. The confiscation of Aboriginal land, for instance, was justified as a “national good,” not as a way to punish Indigenous veterans specifically. However, the impact of these policies was devastating, regardless of intent. Indigenous soldiers, who had fought and died for Australia, were denied the same opportunities to rebuild their lives as their white comrades. Our story isn't perfect, but its also not the story of shame you try to paint, you're a disgrace.

The fight against misinformation and disinformation on this platform is an unfair one, @elonmusk. I recently received the below message as a result of attempting to “participate in the public town square”, just as you asked us to. I am a member of “the left”, the “woke” you have openly waged war on. I saw your motivation and intent for purchasing Twitter - the “great experiment” - and hoped it would deliver on your promise. It has not. Intolerance goes unchecked, even when brought to your (X’s) attention. Reports on openly racist remarks are met with no action, while bureaucratic gatekeeping is applied in full force when ignorance-born intolerance is challenged. My “crime”, apparently, was to employ the use of “copy-pasta” to correct an endless stream of race-based misinformation. You can review the posts and their context here: x.com/belindajones68… I think you will agree that this is a perfectly valid exception to your policies. Your platform certainly has no problem making exceptions for hate speech (see some of my past reports), so where is the balance? I’m disappointed to say that this has given me no choice but to cancel my subscription. I cannot justify paying for the privilege of having my voice suppressed on this platform for doing exactly what you asked me to do. You challenge the left, and the woke, to engage in the public town square while at the same time fostering an environment where people are punished by way of technicalities for doing exactly that. Your experiment is failing. It’s in the metrics you yourself bemoan. The lack of left-wing presence here is a result of your actions, not ours.

This is a fundamentally flawed argument @paulg - nobody is obligated to respect, or dedicate their time to, people who endorse unequivocally hateful ideologies. If the Republicans ran on a Republican platform, and not one of division (e.g., “the war on woke”), then I would be inclined to agree with you… but they didn’t do that.

Don't do this. No matter how much you dislike Trump, don't do this. Half the people in America voted for Trump. If you think voting for Trump makes people evil, then you have to believe half the people in America are evil, and that's just deluded.

In short, competition. Local prices for non-renewables have to go up in line with export prices as we have relatively no agreements to secure those resources at reduced prices (WA being the exception). Renewable energy prices also go up "because they can" - there being no competition. It's the age-old maxim of "charge as much as people are willing to spend" in action. More renewable competition (especially renewable energy storage solutions) will increase that competition, especially as the barrier of entry is so much lower than non-renewables. State-controlled energy production (e.g., nuclear) will never be cost competitive. Prices will always be kept higher than market forces demand as the temptation to use it as a revenue generator for government initiatives would always be too great.

Can some please explain to me in simple terms why are energy costs going up at rates we’ve never seen before, even with record investment in renewable energy? Before you blame the Ukraine war, We are energy independent with vast resources in natural gas and coal.

@OMGTheMess I would put it down to “alarmism”. I grew up on those days too, when 24/7 news wasn’t a thing. As soon as 24/7 news became a thing, they had to fill all that time up with fear-mongering and parents just soaked that up. Social media is alarmism on steroids.

I was recounting a childhood story with a mate and a niggling thought wouldn’t go away until it formed in my head. Here we go. Kids are more mentally fragile these days. I’m wondering if it’s not due to SM but because there’s no freedom for our teens anymore. I would be out all day with mates. No parents. Kids these days don’t even walk to school anymore. Freedom builds strength. I saw it with soldiers. Perhaps we need to let our kids grow and mature by letting them go
