Joel Kim Booster talks about the entertainment industry's "backpedaling" on queer representation, even in light of the success of Heated Rivalry: '“So many gay spaces have become almost exclusively for high-earning, wealthy gay men,” he says. He sees irony in the fact that “the people who would benefit from being in these spaces the most are the people who are never going to be able to get there financially.” He says, too, that despite the success of his own projects and other LGBT-centered shows like Heated Rivalry, the current wave of harassment coming from the White House is having a chilling effect on artists. “People are really frightened and risk-averse right now because of this administration and what we’ve seen in the way of censorship or retaliation,” he says.
