Flaco, the beloved Eurasian eagle owl who escaped Central Park Zoo and spent a year flying free over New York City, was found dead in 2024. He had four different rat poisons in his body. Rat poison doesn't just kill rats, it kills everything that eats rats, and it does it slowly. Poisoned rodents take up to 10 days to die, moving erratically and becoming easy prey. 86% of dead raptors tested in Massachusetts had anticoagulant rodenticides in their bodies. In California, 92% of tested predatory birds showed exposure. A 2020 Tufts study found rat poison in 100% of 43 red-tailed hawks tested in the northeastern US. The Lincoln Park great horned owl family, all of them, died of rodenticide poisoning in 2024. A single barn owl family eats 1,000 to 3,000 rodents a year, for free, all without poisoning everything above them in the food chain. Put up a barn owl box instead.
