all western politics is necropolicy. they get to decide who lives and who dies, and you abide by it. whether or not the verdict passes, you are effectively already dead. any attempt to negotiate that or take some control back is seen as very rude, quite unreasonable, very mean

william is a man who lost and mourned mankind before he ever knew he loved it; everything else is a retroactive attempt to fix what he can for a mankind he fears may never be better. he constructs a clean resolution and why the story must and does deny him

hence why also holmes has to be, philosophically, left out of the narrative until the end. for an incredibly philosophically heavy story the resolution of part 1 is emotional in its core because it must be; william’s philosophy must be denied a clean resolution to endure it

so attempting suicide isnt just a way to resolve the story cleanly. he must commit suicide because living with the contradiction costs too much; and if his plan fails as a result of the gambit he can’t live to see it — suicide is where his morality collapses

at the end of the day the irony and tragedy of william is that he knows the system cannot be reformed and the system is “too big to break” but at the same time believes in the moral imperative to act — if something can be done it must be done no matter the cost

which is why in order to preserve the story and preserve the true core of it william can’t die and holmes must intervene: this way empire is prevented from a clean martyrdom/enemy and is left to second-guess the meaning of it all when william just, disappears

ignoring how that manifests especially in part 2, but specifically his suicide attempt is effectively a way to operate in the empire’s own framework: empire dispenses and defines death, so william’s suicide in narrative operates as an extension of letting empire define death

william is also positioned in an extremely interesting manner because he is a character who in his attempt to bring down empire has fallen so deep inside the language of empire that he ends up operating from within it

and you can argue about the liberal politics of it, sure, but to me the far more meaningful exploration is quite specifically how anti-revolutionary narratives can borrow the “vibes” of revolution while thwarting any real revolution

the thing with moriarty the patriot is that its a story that wears the aesthetics, narrative, and rhetoric of a revolutionary story that ultimately shies away from any actual revolution
