Sheesh. Vegas pouncing on Kings’ many turnovers to go up 4-0 with 6:09 left in the first period. Jim Fox on TV just said the Kings are playing without purpose. Strong words from him.

Does this spell the end for coach Jim Hiller? I doubt it. They play again on Tuesday and they’re scheduled for a day off on Sunday, so a new coach would have little practice time. As long as they still see themselves as “right there,” I doubt they’ll make a move.

The NHL Alumni family is deeply saddened by the passing of Bernie Parent, a pioneer of the Philadelphia Flyers and one of the game’s most beloved goaltenders. Married to his devoted wife Gini through so many years in the Philadelphia organization, Bernie was not only a Hall of Famer on the ice but a true humanitarian off it. His compassion extended far beyond the rink — he was a lifelong supporter of animal welfare and lent his heart, energy, and presence to countless charitable and philanthropic causes. On the ice, Bernie was the cornerstone of the Flyers’ historic back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 1974 and 1975. In those same years, he captured both the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP and the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender — a feat that cemented his place among the greatest to ever play. Over the course of his career, Bernie appeared in more than 600 NHL games, recording 271 wins, 54 shutouts, and a career goals-against average around 2.55. He was named to the NHL First All-Star Team twice, played in five All-Star Games, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984. The Flyers retired his iconic #1 jersey in 1979, ensuring his legacy will forever hang high in Philadelphia. But for all the statistics and accolades, what truly defined Bernie was his smile, his warmth, and his willingness to share a moment with every person he met. He had time for everyone — teammates, fans, friends, and strangers alike — and he touched lives in ways that numbers cannot measure. Our thoughts are with his wife Gini and his family during this difficult time. Bernie will always be remembered fondly, not only as a Flyers legend but as a cherished member of our NHL Alumni Family. His heart, his generosity, and his spirit live on in all who were lucky enough to know him.

Ken Dryden. One of one. I decided to reread his classic book this summer. The written word was life's goal crease for the introspective introvert. His space. He took it all in. Little got by him--whether pucks or a teammates idiosyncrasies. A great noticer of all things. His iconic stance said so much. "You think I'm detached. That I don't care. I care. I'm confident. I'm relaxed. Everything is fine. We're gonna win." And they almost always did. 8 seasons-6 Cups-5 Vezinas-1971 Conn Smythe-Calder. There's been nothing like him before or since. A Hockey God.
