It’s interesting to see how different cultures depicted each astrological sign. These illustrations of Pisces were created throughout the Islamic world, mostly between the 14th and 17th centuries.
In these depictions, Pisces is often depicted as a figure holding fish or riding a large fish, a unique variation on the familiar twin fish motif. This fish-as-vehicle imagery reminds me of ancient myths in which sages, prophets, and wisdom-keepers journey from other realms by boat or fish. These figures serve as custodians of lost knowledge and bridge the gap between our primordial past and modern world. Fittingly, some of these sages have been seen as expressions of Jupiter which is the original planetary correspondence for Pisces.
The fish rider, understood as a spiritual guide or celestial traveler, is reminiscent of the Mesopotamian Apkallu, who are sometimes depicted as fish. The Rishis, or Seven Sages of India, were said to journey from the stars via a large fish. The fish is a traverser of realms and symbolically guides or transports chosen messengers. As a mutable sign that relates to transition, I find this journey symbolism more than appropriate to represent Pisces, the last sign of winter and the zodiac.
What do you think about this depiction of Pisces? I’d love to know.

In Latin, the plural of piscis is pisces which means “the fish” or “fishes”. Most modern translations of “vesica piscis” will have you believe it means “bladder of the fish”. Older, more accurate translations indicate that “vesica” is actually “vessel”. This means that “vesica piscis” originally meant “vessel of the fish”. This also makes far more sense symbolically.
To help us unpack the symbolism of the vesica piscis I refer Barbara Walker's book The Women’s Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets:
“A world-wide symbol of the Great Mother was the pointed-oval sign of the yoni, known as the vesica piscis, Vessel of the Fish. It was associated with the ‘fishy smell’ that Hindus made a title of the yonic goddess herself, because they said women’s genitals smelled like fish. The Chinese Great Mother Kwan-yin (the Yoni of Yonis) often appeared as a fish-goddess. As the swallower of Shiva’s penis, Kali became Minaksi the ‘fish-eyed’ one, just as in Egypt, Isis swallowed Osiris’s penis after transforming into Abtu, The Great Fish of the Abyss.”
The yoni, like any gate or opening, can both “receive and deliver”, giving it the capacity to also “conceal and reveal”. In art, the vesica piscis can be expressed as the mandorla (Italian for almond) which often encompasses figures like Christ or Mary. The vesica pisics is also contained within the ichthys fish, a significant symbol in early Christianity.

Johfra Bosschart loved to embed meaning wherever possible. As an example, in his Pisces painting, the cord that connects the fish has twelve dots of light on it. No doubt, these lights represent the twelve signs of the zodiac with Pisces being the twelfth and final one. But it’s worth noting that the cord is purple, which is a combination of red and blue, the colors of the two fish. These small details are worth further examination.
The red and blue color combination reminds me of the phenomenon known as the Doppler Effect, or what’s sometimes referred to as “redshift”. The term comes from the discovery that when an object moves away from an observer, its color shifts toward red and when moving closer, it shifts toward blue. This change in color isn’t noticeable to the naked eye but can be detected by instruments sensitive to light waves.
If one fish is red and the other is blue, it can be interpreted that one fish is “departing” while the other is “returning”. Similarly, one fish could be considered ascending while the other is descending. Interestingly, redshift is often discussed in relation to the torus field because one side projects while the other receives. For further insights, see my other posts about the toroidal nature of the Pisces glyph. The symbolic value of the red-blue color combination is also worth further dicussion.
As always, there's more to appreciate about Bosschart’s rendition of Pisces if you take the time to look. What do you think about this rendition of the sign? I’d love to know.

@Jordan_Sather_ I've seen the TR3-B two or three times using night vision goggles, so I don't need any convincing about that. Wild if true.
