@Jenny_1884 Very simplistic view - you also had a TV aerial, not Sky, Netflix, etc. A dial up phone, not broadband, iPhone, etc. one TV, not several flat screens. And so on for almost every part of your life.

When I married in 1981 we both worked & most of our salary went on paying the mortgage as the interest rate was 15% at the time. Everything we owned was 2nd hand & we never went out for meals as we couldn’t afford to. We rented our TV Went to the launderette every weekend as had no washing machine. Only had new clothes at Xmas & birthdays as presents. We went without until we could save enough to pay for something. It’s always been hard whether you are young or old. So those out there that think we had it easy we didn’t. Our governments are to blame, not the old.

Just a few decades ago, a working class man could have a nice house & look after his wife & kids on a single salary doing good honest work Now single-income households are almost impossible to sustain for most people Families have lost around 35 hours of leisure time per week to compulsory work Just a few decades ago a house was 3x salary. Now it is 10-12x salary No real increase in living standards, just more tax and more interest & debt to the banks And what about our children not being able to spend any time with their parents?

@robprogressive Inequality is the reason that many people are & feel poorer. There needs to be an asset tax as well as income tax…

The average Brit is broke £30k debt. £200k mortgage. £1k savings. Council tax up. NI up. Income taxed. Costs rising. Assets zero. This is how people get poorer without noticing Do you understand?

I would be interested in others views on Badenoch. When she speaks - and I listened to her on Kuenssberg this morning - I always feel she is aloof and talking down to people, very patronising. Have I got this right?

@robprogressive ‘Council tax is actually a wealth tax’ …. Good!👍. The more you have, the more you pay whilst still leaving you with loads.

Why do I have to pay over £5,000 to have my bins emptied Just because my house is bigger? Or in a different area? It’s the same ‘service’ whether your house is worth £200K or £2 million Up to £5,835 a year to get your bins emptied Oh, and if I ALREADY pay a national tax, why am I paying a local tax on top? Council tax is actually a wealth tax

Richard Tice said that Angela Raynor should resign over £40,000 of stamp duty. Today it is revealed that the same man has avoided £600,000 of corporation tax. Should he resign? Or is it one rule for posh blokes and another for working class women?

@robprogressive Taxes support society and shared infrastructure such as the health system, etc, etc. but you know this already.

Why do you have to pay 10% of what you earn on Council Tax for your house… When you already paid 15% stamp duty to buy the house… From money you paid 45% tax on in the first place  That’s 3 f*cling taxes just to LIVE.  Why do you have to pay 20% tax on a new car  And then up to £5,490 road tax  And then 59% fuel duty and 20% VAT which is £41.46 out for a £70 tank in tax  That’s 3 f*cking taxes just to DRIVE   AND there’s STILL POTHOLES f*cking everywhere Beyond a joke

@robprogressive That’s how society infrastructure gets paid for - you know, all those shared facilities that the rich folk wouldn’t pay for unless there was tax. Idiot!

@SketchesbyBoze Do not, I pray you, compare the genius of Jane Austen with the Beatles . They are not comparable. But you are perfectly at liberty to compare Miss Austen’s work with that of the Brontè sisters. Music and Literature are two entirely different things.

I see people questioning the genius of Jane Austen and the Beatles. Sorry but sometimes the conventional wisdom is correct. We take their innovations for granted because every subsequent artist was influenced by them. Being contrarian doesn’t make you elite, it makes you wrong.

Labour held Gorton & Denton for 52 years. 13,413 majority in 2024. Last night Labour came THIRD - behind a plumber. Labour’s vote share crashed from 50.8% to 25%. This isn’t decline. It’s a political extinction event. Starmer killed Labour in its own heartland
