My life is not a statistic or for medical profit . I am a real person with a story, today I share my reality. Living with diffuse systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) in its beginning stages looks peaceful on the outside , me on the couch with my little dog, wrapped in my pink blanket. You might notice the early signs: taut, shiny skin on my face that feels like a tightening mask, a slightly smaller mouth opening, red spots (telangiectasia), and the thickened, waxy, tight skin starting on the back of my hands. But the real weight of this disease is what you can’t see yet , the internal changes that have already begun. Right now, in these early stages, I’m dealing with the start of internal organ involvement. My digestive system is showing signs , heartburn, swallowing difficulties, bloating, and those unpredictable swings between constipation and diarrhea that make eating and daily life more tiring than it should be. Fatigue hits deep and constant. There’s also the ongoing watch for effects on my lungs (possible scarring that could lead to shortness of breath), heart (rhythm issues or reduced function), and kidneys (sudden blood pressure spikes that need immediate attention). In diffuse systemic sclerosis, internal fibrosis and vascular damage often move faster than in the limited form. The coming months and years may bring more noticeable challenges: worsening GI motility, potential lung involvement like interstitial lung disease, cardiac complications, or kidney risks. Many people experience progression in the first few years, but outcomes have improved with early intervention , regular monitoring, medications to slow fibrosis, blood pressure checks at home, and proactive care can make a real difference. Early Detection is key to slowing it down. I had mine for 5 years undetected. I’m sharing this not for pity, but so you understand: even in the beginning, “looking mostly okay” doesn’t mean everything feels okay inside. Chronic illness warriors balance symptoms, doctor visits, rest, and still trying to live fully. If you know someone with scleroderma or any rare autoimmune disease, a little extra patience and “how are you really doing?” goes a long way. Early awareness and support matter , they can help slow progression and improve quality of life. Sending strength to everyone navigating invisible battles.
