Today is my birthday! I’m spending it packing up my life in Toronto and preparing for the next chapter. Feels bittersweet in the moment, but I’m so excited about what’s ahead. The past year has brought some spectacular people & opportunities into my life and the future’s looking brighter than it has in a while 🥰☀️ Thanks to everyone who’s played any part in that!

My career life has almost always been a happy and fulfilling one and I attribute that mostly to the underlying attitude I have about it: I love work, I try to do even menial tasks well, and I am always (truly always) scanning for opportunities to expand, take meaningful risks & upskill. It’s a game that I genuinely enjoy playing, even when I’m losing. I don’t have this attitude in all areas of my life. Notably, I have historically disliked dating with a passion and had what I would consider ‘bad luck’ romantically. That said - I’ve spoken to many people who struggle with work and when I talk to them about why, they often claim bad luck. But when I ask a few additional questions, it often becomes clear that the underlying problem runs deeper. They may be resentful about ‘having’ to work, quiet quit any environment they consider non-ideal or expect large rewards without significant creativity, risk-taking or investment/effort. When it comes to work, it’s always been obvious to me that bad luck favors the reluctant and the resentful. The same has not always been obvious to me with dating. I’m going to start testing out, going into the new year, what it might look like to become unreasonably optimistic & creative about my love life. I.e.: what might happen if I began approaching it with the same enthusiasm, willingness and genuine ‘fuck yes I get to play this game’ attitude that I take towards other areas of life. My guess is: less persistence with relationships that feel directionally wrong (the same way I quickly release work that feels misaligned), better scanning for great opportunities (the same way I am always looking for good-fit projects) and an instant fuck-yes to pouring positive, collaborative energy into relationships that display strong potential (the same way I approach exciting professional collabs - huge focus on how to keep the relationship positive sum). I really do believe that most things are downstream of attitude & approach but damn can it be hard to see that from the inside of a pessimistic worldview. Unfortunately, it seems to take a healthy amount of delusion to get most of the big things in life right.

I did the whole "quit your laptop job and work in the trades thing" sadly I quickly realized that most career tradespeople are miserable, misanthropic, extremely cynical and angry at the world unfortunately we sort well adjusted folks into white collar

Let’s be clear: until this kind of case is instantly thrown out of court, we’re going to have to live with thugs and miscreants who view encounters with law enforcement as lottery tickets. “America saw what America is” is a true statement: America is a society being held hostage by hood rats wielding the race card for power and profit.
